I left out his early TV movies and series, as well as his documentaries... and except for the Sugarland Express, it´s pretty much chronological.

Personally I think Spielberg is a very good director, probably Hollywood´s best... but I wouldn´t put him next to the Kubricks, Welles, Hitchcocks... and FinchersWink. But he is very good. Often criticized for being a crowd pleaser, often idolized for the same thing. I for one don´t think he has ever made a flawless movie. In fact, I think many of his movies have a number of flaws and some are even bad (The Terminal anyone...). But he does have some great, great moments. My choice... probably Minority Report. A beautiful movie, technically splendit with, some minor plot holes, but nothing that ruins the movie. I would have said Schindler´s List... if it wasn´t for the ending with the actual jews at Schindler´s grave... that was just too much. And even without it, the movie does fall in the "poor jews-horrible germans" cliché which we have seen over and over again. But it is well done, so I really don´t mind it.

Now you...

A) It's a Holocaust film, what the f**k did you expect, Springtime for Hitler?

B) It didn't do that at all. It showed how such a terrible human tragedy could bring out both the heroic (Schindler) and the sadistic (Goeth) in men. It is not so much about the Holocaust as it is a man's capacity for good even in Hell.

Spielberg gets so much flak because his movies are blockbusters, but he's one of the most gifted filmmakers of all time and I'll treasure his movies forever.

My top ten:

1. Jaws
2. Schindler's List
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
5. E.T.
6. Munich
7. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
8. Minority Report
9. Jurassic Park
10. The Color Purple

He's in a slump right now, but that Abe Lincoln biopic might be just what he needs to get him back on track.

I am not a big fan of Spielberg, but some of his movies have been well done blockbusters such as, the Indy movies, Empire of the Sun, Color Purple, Duel, Saving Private..., and maybe one or two more. Overall, though I think he is certainly a "crowd pleaser" although I'd add a couple things to that probably.  Munich was a piece of trash and I am still surprised by its success.

Anyways my favorite is the classic known as Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  What a well done film.  Entertaining, thrilling, wacky, and full of bright colors.

Well I personally dislike Holocost movies cause (and this might sound cruel) they are pretty easy to do. The second world war is pretty much the best thing that could have ever happend to Hollywood. Having said that, Schindler´s List is by far the best and a very beautil movie as well.

And please people don´t get all "how dare you say that?" on me, it´s pretty obvious I don´t mean anything of it in a bad way

Says who? List me all the Holocaust movies and pick five that people think are great. Most come off as exploitative and cheap (Life Is Beautiful, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the infamous The Day the Clown Cried). Schindler's List is the only one that almost everyone agrees is a great film.

I didn't. I simply pointed out that you were completely wrong.

I know you said no early work, but Duel from '71 is his true masterpiece.. pure, deeply scary, and Dennis Weaver is terrific

Duel was great!  Especially the scene at the gas station where you can see only the truck driver's boots.  I voted Saving Private Ryan, not just because of the technical side, but because it has some very interesting ideas.

I disagree - the final scene highlighted the fact that of the 1,000 jews saved by Schindler, generations have grown, whereas there were still only 4,000 jews left in Poland (and this 50 years after the Holocaust).

To my mind, one of the greatest films ever made.

I miss Duel and 1941 (where he made mockery of all cliché movies about the WWII. That scene with John Belushi in the plane is pretty funny).

From the list I go with Color Purple. But other are fine too like Schindler's, Ryan, Third Kind, Amistad, etc, and a mention to Sugarland Express.

I voted for Empire of the Sun. Fantastic film and one of my favorites of all time.

My favorite five from that list though are:

1. Empire of the Sun
2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
3. Schindler's List
4. Munich
5. Artificial Intelligence: AI

Hahaha... ah, priceless. Nothing like old good "I am right, you are wrong". And you pretty much made my point with the holocaust movies. And what I mean by "they are pretty easy to do" is the fact that with a little story about a jewish family in those time, you get yourself an easy tearjercker. And way too many movies have done it.

mmm, seems like I have to see this Duel movie (never heard of it)Embarrassed

As an early film, Duel was OK, but personally, I don't find enough there to warrant rewatching for, unlike The Color Purple, Munich, Saving Private Ryan or Schindlers List.
