I do live in the US, but my particular state (West Virginia) is very low on good quality custom resouces, at least on its face. But Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough, aye?
I would appreciate it very much if you would be able to PM me that list. It would mean alot. I've been trying to find some seriousely good custom makers for more affordable prices, so anything you can provide me with would help tremendousely.
I suppose I'm against DiMarzios personally simply because my personal taste goes for the warmer (and in my opinion, much richer) tone that all Duncans I have heard seem to have. I guess sometimes I get a little too judgmental. After all good sound is alot like beauty, right? It's in the eye of the beholder.
Anyway, thanks aagain for the list. I'll be looking forward to rumaging through the undoubtedly eclectic and vast collection of choices it will present to me. :)
Cheers.

^No problems man.
I'll see about getting that list to you at the absolute maximum, within the next 48 hours, but I may be able to find it sooner than that. I'll also do some research to make sure the custom shop list I give you has only guys still in production obviously, since it's possible some guys have gone out of business since I last saw that list a few months back. Well, my new Line 6 Variax 700 arrived a few weeks ago, and so far I'm loving it. The model selector knob is giving me some problems, but other than that I'm 100% happy with it. The simulations of the acoustic guitars, banjo, sitar, 12 string etc. are extremely cool to play around with, and for normal use I'm really enjoying the Telecaster and Les Paul models. You can change from Les Paul / bridge humbucker to Telecaster / neck singlecoil just using the 5 position pickup selector ... 10 years ago, if someone had told me that would be possible some day, I wouldn't have believed it.
![]() My only complaint with the Variax 700 would be that it doesn't simulate modern guitars ... it's vintage only. Having said that, if they ever build a 7 string Variax with simulations of Ibanez RG, Music Man (Petrucci) and/or active pickups ... I'd be the first in line to buy one! ![]() |

Well, I don't really want to discuss it here, since that will just derail the thread, but I'm more than happy to start a new thread to discuss it. BTW, closer to on topic, it's good to know you're fairly happy with your Variax ![]() Edited by HughesJB4 - December 22 2008 at 05:22 |

I got a Korean made Squire Strat. I've played it against the real deal ( American built ) and you can't tell the difference. Especially when you've got it cranked. I play it through a '97 Trace Elliot Tramp.

LOL - I bought the PRS used, so it actually ended up costing only a little bit more than my Strat (I probably spent an extra $600 on the custom electronics in the Strat), and only a few dollars more than my Martin D-35 (I still have to take pics of that one)...

Anything that will hold it's tune.
Actually, my main guitars are an American Strat and a Taylor 440-ce. I've got an embarrassing number of other cheaper instruments in my studio, the current one that gets the most use is a little Washburn thinline that does quite nicely for my humbucker needs.
I played a Peavey Tracer forever back in my metal days. Remarkably good guitar for my use back then, but I refuse to fight with tremolo systems now since I really don't use the bar anymore.

Any opinions on semi-acoustics, particularly Ibanez semi-acoustics? I recently saw this cutie
(AFS-95T) and thought: "Whoa, now there's a guitar I'd buy if I won a
huge amount of money on horses", but are there better options for the
price (< 500€)?

^Many non-Japanese made Ibanez guitars can be hit or miss (don't worry that much, because the 'miss' guitars are in the minority).
Just as a general thing with Ibanez, many people (at least those that know a thing or 2 about guitars) aren't happy with the stock pickups and occasionally, you get a cheaper end Ibanez that doesn't exactly have stunning fretwork. The guitar you're looking at is most likely better value for money than offerings from many other brands. I myself am obtaining an Ibanez within the next few weeks, and getting rid of the stock pickups and putting in proper brand name American made pickups is my main priority. |

I'd only get a semi-acoustic if you gig frequently with other instruments - otherwise you can get a much better guitar for the same price and just put a mic in front of it when you play a gig. Plus, you can always add on a decent pickup later if you start gigging out a lot (if you don't already). |
