When my wife says "we should have turned right at that turning we just went past", I find it hard to resist the temptation to turn round and look.

When I hear Debs or Alex saying "look at that" or "Did you see that?" while I'm driving, my response is always the same "No, I'm watching this idiot infront of me... describe it to me"

In a way, it is, Jim. I have both (a car kit and a couple of kids). Kids you can ignore for a while, and focus on traffic in the mean time. With a phone call, especially a business or work related one, this is impossible. I always try to postpone the phone calls that really require my full attention until I get home. In contrast, when I have to drive for a couple of hours, I often call someone from my network to catch up - then it's more like talking to your passengers, except that the passenger is not physically present.

Tis true. People you may chat to in the car can pick up your body language and will shut up at a junction or dangerous part of the road. You are also more relaxed when chatting to them. A phone conversation takes up more thought and uses more of your brain and definitely detracts from your driving ability.

Is having a conversation via a hands free kit really more distracting than having a couple of children in the back seat?

I'm with Alan on that one, especially where the 'R' word is concerned; difficult year ahead, I fear...

I always thought the Shed was the place your father took ya to correct your behavior... at least it used to be.
So, belt, paddle or hand?

I knew there was a reason why I should be hanging round in here more often.

the 21-year-old said she had felt there were times when using a phone while driving was acceptable.
She told the court: "I didn't think I should be chatting away when manoeuvring roundabouts, but in the right conditions..."
Prosecutor Alan Blake replied: "In the right conditions on the M40 at 70mph?"
She added: "I probably would have slowed down."
She also told the court she could send and receive messages without taking her eyes off the road. |
Absolutely unbelievable. I simply can't understand how any rational person thinks they can engage in text messaging whilst driving, when most can't even hold a conversation on a phone without being affected.
Over here many states and municipalities are quickly passing laws making it illegal to text while driving, and some even ban cellphone use unless you have a headset or other "hands-free" device.

I can't understand why even hands free are acceptable. People are incapable of concentrating on their driving and having a conversation at the same time. Still the statistics say that women are better drivers than men. What a load of bo ks - but that may have something to do with the fact that this morning whilst on my bike I was cut up by a woman driver.

It's all a long way away from when I worked in a bank mumblemumble years ago - guaranteed profit sharing bonus (usually around 10% of salary ), guaranteed Xmas bonus (usually about 5 - 10% ).
Mind you, I was only on £1,995 pa in those days

What makes it worse is that this year is the first one in ages where I've actually got myself into bonus territory, and now there isn't going to be any because of a number of merchant bankers (and that's meant as rhyming slang) at the top who've lost all our money.
Gits.

Have you seen Panorama recently...?
