Of course that Alistair Darling fellow's helped himself to a sizable chunk of that and gave it to a certain Gordon Brown esq. to spend of fast beer, loose cars and warm women with his chums in Threadneedle Street. which is only fair I guess, considering the amount of help they gave me over the past year - how well I remember the long nights the three of us spent huddled around a monitor debugging data-capture software that was returning every other byte when the hardware was taken down to -55ºC ... happy days. I only hope they remember to deposit an appropriate portion of their bonuses into my bank account under my mattress when the time comes.

On a slightly different subject, but still involving stupidity and driving... drinking

We were watching Police Camera Action (sorry ) the other night, which was the usual pre Christmas, dont drink & drive etc etc affair, part of which got a group of people together, all of whom admitted to D&D on a regular basis.

In a controlled environment, they drank the usual amount they'd consider OK to consume & still be able to drive & then used a car simulator with the sort of results you'd expect. So far, so predictable...

What I didn't expect was the results obtained using a police regulation breathaliser (limit for driving = reading of 35)

Bear in mind, the people tested during the programme had varying amounts of alcohol, the smallest being 4 glasses of wine & the upper being (if I remember rightly) 10 Malibu & Cokes, only 2 people failed the test & they were by no means the heaviest drinkers (the person on the Malibu frenzy only blew a reading of 4!). The presenter himself had 5 large vodkas & only blew a reading of 28..

Naturally, the readings depend on body size, the time you last ate & to an extent the type of alcohol consumed, but to me, this didn't matter.

What was supposed to be a programme reinforcing the message of why you shouldn't drink & drive effectively proved that police breathalisers are an arbitrary method of checking anyway & you can guarantee the wobbling classes came away from the programme thinking "screw it, as long as I eat beforehand, I can drink what I like"... which to an extent, appears to be true.

Scary stuff...

It also means that European visitors are spending loads more money in the UK, especially in London - it might just save a few retail businesses - and it's probably not doing exports too much harm either; none of which makes up for all the negative effects, but certainly mitigates things a bit.

£1 = e1 may be good for local attractions in the UK.  People will be visiting places nearer to home instead of disappearing to Spain or Greece twice a year.  Our steam railway is already noticing a slight upturn in passenger figures and Santa trains are sold out.  www.gwsr.com

Looking grim, the Senate refused to pass a bailout bill, but now the Bush Administration says they'll find a way to get the automakers the money anyway, not exactly sure how.  Plus since the Administration only has a month left in office, I don't know if they even have time to do it.
