LOL Psychobabble, mayhaps?  Good point nevertheless about psychology, not sure about sociology though. It's about giving a large audience what they want within a short span of time and limited musical parameters.

I was thinking that a sociological understanding of mdern culture enables you to tweak you music to take advantage of scoial moires. I bet a lot of research is done by the record companies in order to determine what the "next big thing" is.

Could be but I think it's more likely that the moment one album clicks, a hundred near-fascimiles follow so that a trend  - next big thing - is established.

Most of the older stuff I was already familiar with. This year I really got into:

Black Mountain- they only have a couple albums out, but they're amazing.
Ozric Tentacle
Porcupine Tree

I've been off and on with this one all year long, but only until rescently have I really gotten into it. The concept behind it is some of the most dense, and darkest sh*t I have ever heard of. It's almost horrifying to know the concept, and read about it while listening to the music. Everything about it is so thematic, and it provokes so many emotions, and almost none of them positive. To be able to listen to the album, and actually understand the music is one thing. To listen to it, and know the story behind it is a whole new realm of "diffucult".

Good choice. NIN is one of my favorite bands, and definetely my #1 non prog band. I saw that you enjoyed the Fragile too. Great stuff. I only wish they had more material like those two, though "Broken" came close when I ran across that one.

My discovery was 'In a Flesh Aquarium' by Unexpect.

I startet a thread just short while back asking for recommendations, and among them there was this gem. This is my discovery for this year, just up my street. I'll be listening to this for a long time to come. Thanks to whoever suggested this.

Rush, without a doubt. I had a couple of their albums in my PC for a while but never cared that much about them. In fact, the guy's voice used to annoy me. A few weeks ago I downloaded their Rush in Rio DVD and it really blew me away, now I downloaded most of their discography and I think they're amazing!!! I think they're in my top 5 prog bands, after Pink Floyd, Genesis and ELP.

2008 was the year I found Prog Archives, so it has been a great year for new discoveries for me.

My best musical discovery for this year and the last 25 years has to be The Flower Kings.  They are now in my top echelon with Floyd, Yes, ELP, UK and Genesis.  It's amazing to think that had I not found PA (thanks Barney) TFK could have gone undiscovered.  Phew!

Other great discoveries are Glass Hammer, Transatlantic, Dream Theater and The Tangent.

Thanks PA Clap.

For me it is Magenta. I know they have been around for a while but I had not heard them before. Anger was on Prog Rock Radio, and I really liked it, so I bought Seven, whcih I have been listening to all year. I bought all the rest of the albums and was not disappointed with anything. However, Seven remains my favourite.

Exactly! The thing about it though is that science hasn't really been able to determine so far what exactly will be a big hit or not. It's more intuition+luck than an actual science. I swear that the greatest pop artists have psychic powers.

Only one really worth noting except for...

NEAL MORSE (Solo, SB, and TA)

I've bought every single oneof his albums and saw him live at 3RP since the year's start. Big year for me.

This year has been a major shift in my musical tastes. I had known about Van der Graaf Generator for a while but had kind of forgotten about them until late last year, and then this year I went and got obsessed with them, and they're my favourite band.
The Mars Volta is a similar case, and now they're my favourite other than VdGG
I've also discovered John Zorn's vast body of work, including his work with Naked City and PainKiller

but wait, there's more:
Giant Squid
Miasma and the Carouself of Headless Horses
Isis
The Pax Cecilia
Black Flag (oh no! punk rock! it could threaten the very existence of prog)
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
The Ocean
Alice in Chains (not a discovery but a rediscovery of one of my favourites from years ago)
Incubus
Gentle Giant
Melvins
Boris
Miles Davis
Sonic Youth

probably more, but that's what comes to mind. it was

That's my thought, as every newbie should say.

I joined Progarchives as a new member about 2 months ago.
For only a few months, I could learn more and more about progressive rock from all PA members.

So please let me say,

My biggest discoveries are PA & all PA members, and that there are many kinds of genres, artists, albums and songs.

Thanks all.

My biggest discovery this year is actually that too much music that is NOT prog is as good as prog.
