Zowie Ziggy is back with his exploration into "modern" RPI...

NUOVA ERA — Il Passo Del Soldato
Review by ZowieZiggy (Daniel)
Prog Reviewer

4 stars Nuova Era is one of my favourite Italian bands (but there are many of them). Unlike many of the genre, they have released more than one album of which ''Il Passo…'' is the fourth one. It is a bit a pity that they didn't last for longer because their second and third efforts were extremely interesting. It seems that the band leader (Walter Pini-keyboards) has a project to release an album with a Tamproban musician. It will be a CD around the theme of Dante's Hell. Wait and see…

Needless to say that this work won't disappoint you if you are into the vintage keyboards/synthesizers sounds of the glorious seventies: mellotron, organ are just phenomenal and as often the case; the lead singer has a passionate and moving style (thanks Claudio).

This album is moderately lengthen (just under fifty five minutes) which is absolutely perfect. There is no moment of relief during this excellent offering. Maybe that ''Lo Spettro Dell'Agonia Sul Campo'' shines a little more, but frankly: there are no weak parts in here. Each song needs to be tasted accordingly (''L' Armistizio'' is another fave of mine).

Bombastic freaks: I highly recommend the short instrumental ''La Parata Dei Simboli''. An orgical symphony fully reminiscent of ELP. If you prefer the delicacy of some ''Renaissance'' style, you can go ahead with the long title track. A wonderful piano intro leads to a darker and heavier section which again is linked to some Emerson phantasmagoria. The heavy sounds also have to be noticed.

The only minor point if I may, would be that the whole of this work might sound borrowed and too much uniform. This is what costs the fifth star to this very pleasant album who should please all the symphonic music lovers (and not only from the Italian branch since it is mostly instrumental).

E.L.P. and Quatermass... Procol Harum and Pink Floyd... The Moody Blues and King Crimson... Yes and Genesis... Gentle Giant and Californian Psychedelic Rock are common inspiration for RPI!

Clear that all these bands/ movements are integral part of all RPI bands... Yesterday and Today!

Nuova Era can not escape this rule!

And for this fact that RPI is a pure Prog sub genre (and not ISP that not exist, in truth)!

This is my definitive sentence, my dear friends!

P.s.: Great review Daniel!

Santa brought me something a bit early this year. If anyone is interested in purchasing Augusto Croce's "Italian Prog" book, below are a few pictures. I *highly* recommend it.

It reads and acts like a traditional encyclopedia - it's alphabetical and includes band history and members, the records have "rarity" ratings and year/label info, it includes singles (promo, jukebox and retail) as well as albums, a history of the different labels that released Italian Prog (sorted alphabetically by label name and includes catalog numbers for all the records released by the label), a chapter on additional resources (other books on Italian Prog and websites of the bands listed in the book), then the color section of a lot of album and single covers. And, 3 pages of blank note pages where you can write any additional data you want to keep with the book. I haven't listened to the bonus CD yet.

It's very cool. Trust me on this.

I'm certainly in no position to dictate how others should spend their money, but let's face it, being a fan of this genre has never been cheap, and, for the price of a few "rare" italian prog CDs, you get a resource that is, without a doubt, the best I have seen. The work Augusto has done is truly remarkable, and it only seems right that he should get what he deserves for his efforts. Again, I'm not dictating how people should spend thier money, but buying this book is the only *real* way to give credit where it is due.

How's that for a guilt trip, everyone?Wink

My last RPI review is the first review of 'Follia' a real obscure gem from Fabio Celi E Gli Infermieri:

Fabio e Gli Infermieri Celi - Follia CD (album) cover

Follia

by FABIO E GLI INFERMIERI CELI (Italian Symphonic Prog)

4 stars Fabio Celi E Gli Infermieri in 1969 (if the info running time is correct) LP publish a truly forward with the times. And I will explain why. Meanwhile, I can tell you that after a negligible 7'' with the monicker of Fabio Celi & I Pop with Fabio Celi E Gli Infermieri produced a really vitriol album in the lyrics and musically really RPI, although too influenced by the Psychedelic Rock style. If they had been Americans would have a huge success... Instead became a cult band!

Now it must be said that the songs speak of corruption, Camorra and the similars, are difficult to digest at the time (for this fact 'Follia' was censored by RAI, the Italian broacasting), even though the lyrics are light and predictable. However, it is not strange that the only song to be rediscovered in full Prog era had been 'Uomo Cosa Fai' which is the most Prog song of the album, which talks about the discomfort of a man who lives in a suburb any ... Almost that Fabio Celi wanted to take cue from Pier Paolo Pasolini, common theme to the POP 'Via Gaetano Argento', bonus track on CD. How sound organ and Moog (but would rather an organ and a Farfisa organ modified to sound like a Moog) dominate the album (not the two bonus tracks, that are POP with heavy lyrics, very close to Van Der Graaf Generator). So while the first two songs (especially 'Follia' that is recited) are pure Psychedelic Rock it is true that 'Il Capestro' and 'Il Presidente' are pure Rock songs. Vice versa true Prog are 'Uomo Cosa Fai' and the dramatic (is the story of a farmer who saw his fields turned into a suburb... From night to day... Sublime message of esteem for Pier Paolo Pasolini... As well as take a stand against modern society!) 'Distruzione' are 100% RPI. And in fact they are more reflective, the arrangements in 'Uomo Cosa Fai' and 'Distruzione' are the point of force of these songs. The production is flat and poor, doing well just to highlight the power of songs. So 'Uomo Cosa Fai' and 'Distruzione' lose much of their potential, even if they are aged well, as indeed the whole album. Fabio Celi sings always pissed, even if the tone softens dive serves.

In general I believe that 'Follia' is an album of 1969, because with pure Psychedelic Rock songs. Shame that the CD has been inserted (not after the songs of the album, the two bonus tracks signed fabio Celi) who have ruined a great album. Album that has aged extreme well. An another Italian obscure jewel that I recommended at all!!!
