A couple of bands from your neck of the woods that you might already be familiar with that seem to come highly recommended are Harmonium and Miriodor.

I third Leg End as a good Cow album to start with. Rock Bottom is Wyatt's best.

I think it is... only problem I've had with it is one person I know hated Leg End, but quite liked IPOL. So, I guess it depends on your taste. |

I went with Gentle Giants.
I very enjoy the albums I got by them.

Would it surprise you if my answer were still Rush?

I love them both to death, but I prefer Crimson. |

I've never heard about Miriodor, actually. But I know Harmonium, barely. I have quite a huge amount of disdain for French-Canadian music, but Harmonium is actually helping me get over that.

I don't listen to Rush. Pat's married and has a child (and another on the way) and loves Rush. Alex is just a n00b. |

I didn't think so.
Don't get me wrong I don't dislike either band, but neither of them is one of my favorites. I kind of think of King Crimson as a Yes-spin-off/side project band. I started listening to them many years ago, but only because I try to collect all things Yes-related, and since Bill Bruford happened to leave Yes for this side project... Gentle Giant, on the other hand, is one of those "greatest prog rock bands that you never heard of" until the past few years. For the most part, good and enjoyable music, but they haven't been filtered through these ears 20,000 times like a certain previously mentioned other band.

Egg's debut National Health's Of Queues and Cures Henry Cow's Leg End (although Western Culture is my favourite) Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom (best album recorded by anyone. My favourite album of all time) |

King Crimson and Gentle Giant I both like more than Yes, but I love all 3. I guess it's an advantage I have to being exposed to their entire discographies at once, because the 80s period of Crimson is my favorite and my dad never got much into KC or GG, just Yes alot (like your situation). |

Yep. It actually is a pretty good album. I just don't like it near as much as Leg End. |

All right, so seems you guys pretty much agree on which albums I should get, neat.
I gotta get that Tim Buckley live in London album first though, and I bet the albums you recommended are a nightmare to find in my area.
