Topic: PA's Favorite Prog Band: Showdown 2008--GG v. KC Posted: December 16 2008 at 14:02 |
This poll is pretty much the poll that determines what ProgArchives' favorite band is for 2008.
King Crimson won the tournament at the beginning of the year (Ultimate Prog Tournament), and Gentle Giant recently won another tournament (Battle to Stardom).
Both are paradigmatic progressive rock bands. Which one will be PA's favorite? Only you can decide.

You're absolutely right, Alex.
Only I can decide. And I have.
Game, set, match.

Hard, even though both aren't faves of mine, I dig quite a lot their material. Lately I've been digging much more KC, so it has to be it. Though if you had asked me before, or maybe after, it would have changed, surely.

I own 7 Gentle Giant studio albums and 1 live album and I play them regularly. They never cease to amaze me with their brilliant musicianship and wierd ideas which nearly always work.
I own 3 King Crimson albums and I can't recall the last time I could be bothered to play one. The only tracks that really impress me are Epitaph and The Night Watch, though Fripp's solo almost ruins the latter.
I think that says it all - GG by a country mile.

If Fripp is God, Zappa is the God of God.

Well I vote KC . I am pretty confident that "febus" would concur as well, can we punch in 2 votes for the King?

Gentle Giant all the way. Their songs are far better and much more enjoyable.

As much as I enjoy GG, the fact that KC is still alive, producing vital, important music 40 years later, seals the deal.

Both are in my top 3 bands along with Univers Zero, so I'll throw in a vote for the underdog this time.

I'll vote King Crimson because their early albums are really unique and atmospheric, and it's one of my most listened band, but I think that GG deserves the win here.
