Why is it that the colon foll wed by a right bracket has become the rep for a smiley face. Surely the normal face is two eyes above an upturned mouth. Does this notation mean that they have died with a smile on their face?? (or sometimes as I have seen one eye shut )

Alan - time you started using velcro or slip -ons - i haven't had to fiddle with laces for years
(possibly a good shed topic..?)

Hmm, slip-ons. Might resolve the problem with work shoes, but slip-on hiking boots are never a good idea. One of our Scouts went hiking (in Yorkshire in October) in a pair of slip-on trainers (also never a good idea) and lost them both in a two foot deep mud hole. And then went arse over tit into the afore-mentioned mud hole. We managed to retrieve his trainers but they were of course full of mud.
and we still had 6 hours of walking to go.

Hi Alan,
If you don't do so already; When polishing your shoes also 'polish' the laces. The polish adds grip to the material and the lace(s) tends not to cpme undone. |
Thanks for the tip Lee. The only problem lies in the phrase "when polishing your shoes". I shall speak to Jeeves forthwith.

No it's not just you. My Timberland shoes come undone all the time. Usually when I'm in a crowd, or generally in a very inconvenient place!

wax is grippy? I would never have thought of that.
You could take the Jasper Carrot approach to guitar tuning (get someone else to tune it and then weld the bugger) - apply a dab of super-glue.
Alternatively - tie a reef knot rather than a granny - aside from the minor problem of not being able to tie a bow in the first place - that was usually the downfall of my lace tying escapades. Then I haven't owned a pair of lace-ups for 40-odd years.
damn, four successive posts on shoe laces and I haven't managed to work 'aglet' into the conversation

^^^ Ok, I'm assuming that you were having a discussion on PA(?) People can be over sensitive, of course, but more often than not, things get misenterpreted, especially over international boundaries. Someone made a complaint about a Brian Eno review I once wrote, where I claimed Eno was 'taking the steaming p!ss' This was deemed very offensive by someone in South America ( I think) and I was politely asked to edit the review accordingly, which I did.
Also, it's wise not to blur the boundaries between honesty and diplomacy. In this 'over sensitive' world it will get you nowhere, I promise you. I've tried it. I know...

I totally understand your frustration Scott, however, I have learnt that "hate" tends to be "envy" in a different disguise and when I see a negative comment I just laugh to myself and ingore their knaivety because I now know what they really mean!
I find the whole thing somewhat peculiar in a way as we all follow a minority art form and you would think that fans would be more supportive of the genre as a whole.

"What's that? You're from Canada. We'll I hate Rush. They suck and are totally unoriginal. Neil Peart couldn't beat his way out of a paper bag. And Alex, well Alex plays like he is also using Geddy's balls".
I honestly don't care if people hate Rush. Everyone has their own tastes. In my point of view, that is your loss, but hey whatever. I honestly could care less if I were the only person on PA that liked Rush. I am glad that I am not the only one, and that I have my compatriots out there. (You know who you are and who you aren't ). And although this rant is about Rush, it applies to all bands.
I suppose that I am pretty easy to please. I have had mostly good luck with finding bands that I enjoy here on PA. There are a few that I have tried that I don't like, but I don't go into every thread that might remotely concern that band and talk smack about them. I am pretty certain that I have posted enough posts within this forum regarding bands that I don't like (at least not yet), that many of you could create the list, as well as, if not better than I could. But I would say that at least 99% of the time I have talked of these bands that I don't like in a non-insulting way. So I guess that is my rant. Why is it so difficult for PAers to play nice with each other? |
It does appear that a few people define themselves by what they don't like, rather than by what they do. The list ever grows (Dream Theater, ELP, Pink Floyd , Rush - it looks like Opeth and Porcupine Tree are heading for a the backlash list too) |
Bands seem to be like bubbles - they get bigger and bigger (through their own hard work and merit) then go *pop* - they're yesterdays papers (this whole site is largely about yesterdays papers, but they are too good to forget and continue to be discovered by new generations of fans ) If i like a band and add them to my "list" they are "mine" for life. i hope PT and Opeth don't come under any sort of "backlash" as both these bright stars, are still in their ascendancy and promise greater things!

I'd like to rant about having blood taken, it's a horrible experience every single time. I was cursed with tiny veins apparently, as they have to use the infant needle every time. Then the blood flows very slowly, if at all. I've been having to give a lot lately and my arms are starting to look like that of a heroin addicts... |
Needles, urgh............... I know that sounds wimpy, but I'm scared of them. I never used to be though. I've had vaccinations over the years, and many times, the needles never bothered one bit. But last time I had to get a blood sample in February this year, the nurse managed to somehow not even get the needle into the vein, and when the needle came out, god, it hurt like hell, I seriously had never felt that much pain from a needle being removed from my arm before. And she still had to insert the needle again to find a vein. And when she took it out again, it hurt even worse, and by the end of it, I was literally shaking. I hope this fear doesn't stay with me, since it seems odd to have just developed it this year.

That is until Steve Wilson re-joins the forum (could be quite soon, as he's just released a solo album ), when all of a sudden everyone loves Porcupine Tree

That's why you have to go the avant route - can't bash what you've never heard of in the first place.
That said, it seems like the prog poll insanity is cyclical - every so often we have a slate of ridiculous polls usually involving one band which is often set up so that the naysayers can come out and flame away - just a little while ago I thought we were actually getting some interesting poll questions, but now we're back into the regime of the boring, IMO.

Or maybe it is best that I avoid avant altogether, because "you can't bash what you've never heard in the first place". I have heard some decent music in the avant category and I'm not closed-minded about avant/RIO. I certainly don't begrudge anybody for listening to RIO/Avant. At this point it is not my thing. I just haven't grown tired of all of the so-called "retro" bands or "non-progressive" prog bands yet. Maybe someday I will, but after 20+ years, I kind of doubt it.
