This seems like a good idea. (I love black metal. I love prog.)
Any recommendations? And could someone run me over the musical characteristics of prog/black metal?

It fell to the ground and it's wings broke and died
But when the time got by, back to sky it flied cause the wings healed in time and the bird was I-Wintersun

Emperor would be on the throne of that genre. Not just literally.

Actually, some are already in the archives:  Agalloch, Arcturus, Borknagar, Enslaved, Ulver, and Vintersorg.  I think that Burzum and Xasthur (and to a lesser extent, Leviathan) could be considered prog.

Burzum is awesome, btw.
I have Filosofem and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss. He should be in the archives if he isn't already.

In addition to what has already been mentioned (Arcturus is a must, also really love newer Borknagar and Vintersorg), I can recommend Mörk Gryning's "Pieces of Primal Expressionism". Solefald might also be worth checking out, and also Hidden In The Fog (very Emperor-influenced, but really good). I know there's more... will post it when I think of it.

Filosofem is a truly outstanding album.  To be sure, Varg takes a minimalist approach (if not altogether anti-musical--see some of his comments regarding its recording); however, one (not I, as my sloth won't permit it) could argue that it's one of the most progressive black metal, if not progressive metal, records to date.

In Lingua Mortua and Wolves in the Throne Room are two that need mentioning, and i might be worth checking out In the Woods..., Drawn, Ulver and Virgin Black, though they're not exactly Black Metal
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

Emperor's 'Anthem to the Welkin' is the first thing that came to mind. Beneath the surface chaos of that record there is some very intricate (and beautiful) music going on. You gotta look hard to find it though.

I love Arcturus' Aspera Hiems Symfonia! Their later albums don't do anything for me though.

Hmm... i would add 'Axis of Perdition' and 'Blut Aus Nord' as well... they are insanity put to music. Two of my favorite bands.

Perhaps Aborym and Dodheimsgard as well.... can this stuff really be called Prog though?: Ha... it's definitely "progressive" i guess.

I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity...
