I just read the band's PA bio, and they were described as uncategorizable or something to that effect.  If they were to be moved, the bio would definitely have to be re-written, since it kind of centers around them being kind of zeuhl but kind of not. LOL

Nor would I dream of doing something like that unilaterally even if I could, hence the wink.

I'd need approval from both teams, but it's hard to get a response from ZART.  Wink

I don't really hear Magma in there, nor Hatfield, to be honest...

Sometimes - and now I'm going to sound really crazy - I wonder if Kultivator may have influenced Koenjihyakkei a bit.  No, really - it's obviously far, far gentler and more pastoral, but of course almost all music is gentler and more pastoral than Koenji...  I don't know why, but it always reminds me just a tiny bit (for some unidentifiable reason) of our Japanese noisemakin' friends. Ermm

Now that I'm listening to "Novarest" I maybe can hear some Zeuhl here, but overall I just don't hear it.  No question it's a tough band to pin down - the reviews bear that out, and I see plenty of Canterbury references sprinkled throughout, so it's clear that those who have heard the album are probably hearing the same things I'm hearing.

I guess it's either the 'unclassifiable-ness' of both, or maybe they're both '[Insert Subgenre']/Canterbury' hybrids of a sort!! Tongue  (That is, Yoshida likes Canterbury also, yes?)  That, and maybe a slight touch of indigenous folk music??  Very difficult to pin down... Confused LOL

Well, I'm off now, too.  Back later, possibly...

Area. Is jazz-rock/fusion the correct place?

I'd say it's avant-fusion-RPI personally Big smile

They'd be in my dream RPI sub, but we don't have it, so I'm guessing you're for avant?

Yes, but only because the current Italian genre is called "Italian Symphonic Prog", which won't do for a band like Area at all.  If there were some more general RPI sub I'd vote for that in a heartbeat.

Re: Kultivator

I'd like to see them in RIO/Avant-Prog rather than Zeuhl or Canterbury.

They don't have enough Zeuhl or Canterbury in their sound but they're obviously strongly avant-prog.

Hence: RIO/Avant-prog

Which is what Henry Cow are.  Henry Cow are also Canterbury, of course.

Some might argue that Hugh Hopper's bass work with Soft Machine is quite Zeuhlish too.

Music is so fun to destroy in terms of categorisation!

Melissa, I shall message you soon about Friday... I've yet to even check the route or anything yet.

Edit: never use yet twice in the same sentence
