I think i am more familiar with Jane's Addiction than Smashing Pumpkins, so about Jane's i consider their album Ritual de lo Habitual one of the best american albums that came out in the 90s i adore it, and the song Three Days is absolutely prog. However despite having a couple more of proggy tunes, i don't think they would have a place in this site, honestly i would not call them even prog related just for two or three songs.

About Pumpkins, the material i know from them has nothing to do with prog in my opinion, but i am not expert.

Yes yes yes!!! Smashing Pumpkins should definitely be in PA. I was a big fan of them back in the 90's. When i discovered prog around 2003, i stopped listening to them. These past few days i've been dusting off all my SP cd and realized that with all the tempo shifts, mood changes, experimentations, and the loose concept apparent on most of their albums, how can they not be prog?

Sp definitely gets my vote. Just put them in already.

just an update....  Smashing Pumpkins are being looked at and eval'd for addition...  there isn't much feeling for Jane's Addiction though. In fact..  if it would have come to a vote.. it would have been rejected. For my vote alone at the very least and it would have taken all three of us anyway.

Michael.. if you feel strongly about Jane's Addiction...  tell us why you think so.  I think you made a great case for SP.. in fact I was really skeptical about it when I first saw the thread..until I read your posts.  Anyway... give us some time on evaling the Smashing Pumpkins... and I'll be checking in here to read your thoughts on Jane's Addiction.

yep, and they don't care about bootlegs or downloads, check out Gossimar (or is it spelt gossimer?) on youtube
thats their 30 something minute epic that they've been performing on the road that has been scaring off fans.
I think their albums Machina 1&2 (part 2 is free online), melon cholylie and Zeitgeist are pretty proggy.
Go to their official website, loads of free . Billy Corgan is the santa claus of music downloads.
Thanks!

very interesting suggestions............both great contributors and talents that would  be controversial for sure and on musical merits alone certainly should not go unnoticed. I always thought Perry Farrell would be a good replacement if Robert plant pulled out of a LZ reunion...

I recognized the prog element in Jane's Addiction when Ritual de lo Habitual came out - Three Days and Then She Did are nothing, if not prog epics. Kettle and Ted Just Admit It are pretty proggy as well.

I just think that at that time, in the late 80's, early 90's, the new prog scene was more focused on retro prog, so it was missed - but these days more prog fans expect new prog to sound new - I bet if Ritual were released today, it would easily qualify as a prog release...

Well, I guess I should have listened to them when I was a teenager. As I only know the singles, I thought the Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction were rather, let's say, "arty alternative rock".

interesting responses to an interesting suggestion...

won't promise anything... but a fair eval hahah...I'll take it to the Xover team. It will take all 3 team members accepting, due to being 'controversial' to some.  Personally I haven't heard much of their stuff, but I'll check them out and if the music fits.. they'll get my vote.. if not.. they won't hahah.

Even I am surprised of my non-total opposition to this suggestion... Confused

Actually, it would have my support, on the Smashing Pumpkins side of things. I haven't heard almost any Jane's Addiction to give any opinion.

Smashing Pumpkins for Crossover Prog. What a great idea Cheesecakemouse. I´m sure this will not fare well among some members on PA, but it would be a definite yes from me.

They were thinking for a while there of creating a 40/45 minute instrumental song, but chankged their minds, and in their concerts they constantly cover songs by such bands as Rush, Uriah Heep, and Billy is known to burst out the line"...welcome back my friends to the show that never ends!"
This guy is one of us.
Ithink the pumpkins embody both sides of prog rock, the retro symph style coupled with modern innovation and experimentation.
