Back in the early 1970's we had one of their huge flagship 'Woolco' stores in Hatfield & as a child I loved it if mum & dad said we were going there on a Saturday, as they had a car-park on the roof - how cool was that?

We were deprived of entertainment in Potters Bar...

Of course, customers taking up retail time by frequently visiting to purchase a single item of wood based fixing hardware doesn't help their cause - if you take up 1 minute of time for an assistant on £5 per hour, you've cost Woolworths £0.0834 to sell an item worth £0.05 (and that's before you've asked them whether they have the new Pendragon album in stock, thereby causing a 15 second pause prior to the poor assistant's brain imploding - a collosal further loss of £0.51) - a net loss of £0.0334... every time.

Satisfied, Alan? Hmmm?
Your logic is flawed Mr Garten, you can't buy single items of wood based fixing hardware because they only sell them in packets or boxes. Anyway I can hardly be held responsible if it costs them more in labour costs than the markup on the item, can I?
I like the idea of asking for the new Pendragon CD.

"Do you have the new Pendragon CD please?" he asks, expecting the answer "Is it in the charts?"

"Is it in the charts?"

"Well, it was ProgArchives most popular CD last month"

"What the *&%* is ProgArchives?"

"Never mind"

Actually on most of the occasions I have attempted to purchase a CD in our Woolies, I've failed because they haven't removed the box from the shelves when they sold the last one, hence they rummage through various drawers looking for it (not helped by the lack of alphabetical order) then disappear off to the stockroom for half an hour, then come back and say "sorry we've sold out".

I know that one... hence the fact the last time I bought an album (vinyl, not CD, it was that long ago) from Woolies, was this one:

Quite good, as I remember

he will sell you screws, nails, bolts and hooks individually in a brown paper bag, and if you need a 'receipt' for the accounts dept, he spends 5 minutes wrestling with the till roll and a pair of scissors, before handing you an indecipherable smudge the size of a postage stamp...LOL

I love taking in a washer of an unusual thickness/ diameter, 'cos then he spends the next 15 minutes up ladders, foraging around in dust laden old boxes which once conatined a DIY phrenology kit, and the wooden draws of what used to be a Victorian ladies dressing table, scratching his head and making 'thoughful' noises... irespective of the sizeable queue building up behind me, most of whom are interested in spending more than the 10p he'll charge me for the washer... I think he just loves the challenge...Approve
Have you ever asked him for four candles?

^^ I remember being sent to Woolies by my 8 year old sister, who asked me to get her a copy of the latest single by Elvis Sawdust....LOL

I also remember the time when a group of 15 Skinheads were thrown out of Woolies on a wet Wednesday afternoon, because they had all gone to the cafeteria, bought one cup of tea, and, taking up 4 tables, they attempted to make it stretch round, with one sip each...LOL

ah...Woolies stories...those were the days... (hey Jim/Dean, have you noticed that there's no 'whistful/ nostalgic' emoticon here? could you have a word with M@x?)

Or the old favorite, tartan paint (actually, if you go to the Stevenage one, you'd probably get both)

Our local variant was a long stand: 'Just pop down to the stores and say 'Can I have a long stand, please.'

Nowadays you'd probably be done for harassment and intimidation...

Ooh. Did someone say homemade carrot cake?  If and when that day comes that I find myself on your side of the pond, this will definitely be a point of interest. Smile

This is just too nostalgic. Back in the days of £sd I remember my Dad's shop on the East coast. This was before the days of package holidays where folk from the urban areas of Leeds/Bradford and the Heavy Woollen District (don't you just love that term) used to come over by the trainload on a Saturday and stay in self catering boarding houses for a week or two. My Dad's shop used to sell the essentials and I became a dab hand at operating the bacon slicer, removing the bones from a side of bacon (I could have used the term de-boning, but that is liable to interpretation Wink) and filling up petrol cans with parafin - health and safety had not been invented yet.

After he sold it package holidays, greater car ownership and Tesco's arrived on the scene and after a few years with changes of ownership and type of shop it was converted back to a normal house Cry. Still, at least we had a great time. Trouble was that most of our food was offcuts or just about to go over. Good stuff was for selling Smile.

Those were the days.
