I could have bought a dozen prog records for that.
I did get Wish You Were Here for ten bucks, though. I know all the songs well, but never owned the album- partly because I don't really think it's that great. It's not even in my top five Pink Floyd albums.

Wow. That's one reason I am currently grateful for being single. ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)
WYWH was always my 2nd favorite Floyd album, right behind Animals. The title track is the best.
| The title track is great. But it's a campfire song.
It belongs in the ranks of "Dust in the Wind," "From the Beginning," and "More Fool Me." None of them are progressive rock.
My problem with the album are two bookend songs- they're boring. Eight minutes of synth background and lazy guitar soloing? Really?

I agree with the title track, but it's still a good song. I like those 3 other songs you mentioned too--particularly Dust in the Wind. Wow, I absolutely love those bookends songs and they're still one of my favorites from Floyd. I think it really showcases what they're all about.

Alright. I'm back after finishing my "A Change of Seasons" review and the first thing I notice is "campfire songs". What the hell did I miss?

I like ALL the songs on the album. The music isn't the problem. But "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is boring. It's the same chords, lots of guitar soloing, the same drum work (until the end on the first part), but good vocals.
The middle songs are also very good, but are they progressive rock? Sort of.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I wonder just how "prog rock" Floyd's classical period was. I mean, saying that "The Wall" was progressive? I don't believe it. Then again, that may be because of how often I've heard "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2"" on the radio.

There are many "essential" albums here that I will be rating three or less stars. It started with In the Court of the Crimson King, and the next one will be Wish You Were Here. I expect more hate mail.

I often question PF's full-blown prog credential. Sure, I'd still include them in the movement, but they're arguably not near as prog as Yes, Genesis, ELP, etc. That's how I've evaluated it anyway. Pink Floyd are overrated anyway. Good, but way overrated by the public.

Once I actually get inspired to write some reviews again, I may tackle a Floyd one. Depending on which one I pick, I may be getting some hate mail too.

I said that I want to review most bands in chronological order.
I'm handing Pink Floyd backwards, and for this very reason:
People give their last two albums (the Gilmour-led ones) low ratings, but then praise the hell out of Wish You Were Here.
I don't get that. At all. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is almost the same thing as Gilmour-led Pink Floyd. It's synth background and guitar soloing with some good melody in there somewhere.
I do believe, however, that Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall (and perhaps Atom Heart Mother- the jury's still out on that one) are masterpieces of progressive rock.

Animals, perhaps. Dark Side, not so sure... it's a good album, but is it really a masterpiece (particularly of prog?). The Wall... I never saw the appeal of that one. EVER.

When I review The Wall eventually, it'll probably get 2-3 stars.

| I wrote an essay comparing the themes of Dark Side of the Moon to T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land." So perhaps I have a deep appreciation for the lyrics (and the chord structure of Wright's "The Great Gig in the Sky" are innovative in its genre).
As for The Wall, I'm surprised you don't think highly of that one, knowing some of your tastes.

DSOTM is pretty good; I just listened to it for the first time in 2 1/2 years yesterday. It was better than when I burned out on it. I am simply not sure what to rate it. As for the Wall, I could never get into that album for some reason. It always struck me as lacking in the music department and relying way too much on lyrics/story; it used to bore the hell out of me. I'll listen to it again soon and review it, I think. It has been over 2 years since I've heard any of the other Floyd albums because I burned out on PF so much, so I need to do that in order to confirm what I remember.

I just hope they like me, and my singing. They are so damn good. They play metal fused with jazz and classical.

Welcome to Watersville. It's always FLOODED with words. Say, you haven't heard the Water-logged The Final Cut (which I will be rating four stars, by the way, expecting more hate mail- I mean, how can THE FINAL-FREAKING-CUT get higher the IN THE COURT OF the FREAKING CRIMSON KING???).
