Wow, I absolutely love those bookends songs and they're still one of my favorites from Floyd. I think it really showcases what they're all about.

I like ALL the songs on the album.  The music isn't the problem.  But "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is boring.  It's the same chords, lots of guitar soloing, the same drum work (until the end on the first part), but good vocals.

The middle songs are also very good, but are they progressive rock?  Sort of.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I wonder just how "prog rock" Floyd's classical period was. I mean, saying that "The Wall" was progressive? I don't believe it. Then again, that may be because of how often I've heard "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2"" on the radio.

I do see The Wall as progressive rock, and I see the song you mentioned as only a small part of a grander whole. There are many "essential" albums here that I will be rating three or less stars.  It started with In the Court of the Crimson King, and the next one will be Wish You Were Here.  I expect more hate mail.

Once I actually get inspired to write some reviews again, I may tackle a Floyd one. Depending on which one I pick, I may be getting some hate mail too.

I wrote an essay comparing the themes of Dark Side of the Moon to T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land."  So perhaps I have a deep appreciation for the lyrics (and the chord structure of Wright's "The Great Gig in the Sky" are innovative in its genre). As for The Wall, I'm surprised you don't think highly of that one, knowing some of your tastes.

DSOTM is pretty good; I just listened to it for the first time in 2 1/2 years yesterday. It was better than when I burned out on it. I am simply not sure what to rate it.

As for the Wall, I could never get into that album for some reason. It always struck me as lacking in the music department and relying way too much on lyrics/story; it used to bore the hell out of me. I'll listen to it again soon and review it, I think. It has been over 2 years since I've heard any of the other Floyd albums because I burned out on PF so much, so I need to do that in order to confirm what I remember.
