I've had them on since early afternoon...have played Symphonies 1-6 right thru....Approve

The Ninth Symphony is one of my absolute favorites. On the other hand, I missed so many opportunities to hear some of Dvorak's other symphonies (mainly live concerts, radio broadcasts, but I even had a ripped CD and the CD player wouldn't play it LOL) to think that it's some kind of curse. Cry

far be it for me to try and give someone like you advice Riccy, but I have absolutely adored the Dvorak symphonic cycle, for 20 years (since I was your age, actually...Embarrassed) and THIS is the must have set... it has stood head and shoulders above all others for over 40 years...utterly compelling...(and actually quite cheap...Wink) so please put it on your Xmas list....Big smile

I might, I have no favorite composers conducting Dvorak so far. There was one time, on radio, when the Ninth was played during the weekdays, each day a different recording, with a different orchestra and legendary conductor. I remember liking Eschenbach's and Karajan's versions.

(and I shall try harder to finally to get to listen to the Seventh, if you mentioned it as your favorite; for me, however, the Ninth will never leave the top spot...).

^^how can you say the 9th will never leave the top spot, if you've never heard the other 8?...LOL

the 9th is marvellous, but its quite...erm, American...Wink 7 & 8 are remarkably underrated imho...

yes, its funny about Dvorak's symphonies... unless Bruckner, Brahms, Beethoven or Mahler, there just aren't loads of symphonic versions to buy.  When I was your age, I nearly wore out a Philips cassette of Sir Colin Davis and the Amsterdam Concertgebeuw (?) perfoming Symph 7&8...I think it was my most played classical record, which I used to put on between Rush & Def Leppard...Embarrassed
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I can say it because it constantly takes my breath (as a symphony I mean, imagine really great interpretations of the symphony!), but, simpler, it's one of my favorite symphonies (aka of all the symphonies). Big smileWink Hard for a symphony to pawn so many other symphonies, and be in the end defeated by a younger (oops, theoretically, older Geek) sibling.

of course it's American, it's got a big subtitle called "From the New World" and it captures the American influence, given Dvorak's late contact with the continent.  Wink

I haven't heard the other 8, true, but since Dvorak considered his first 4 symphonic failures, I guess the chances of 9th being utterly the best suddenly increased...LOL

I haven't searched too deep in Dvorak recordings, but you may be right...I have Beethoven's Symphonies (all of 'em) with 6 different orchestras and conductors; I record, collect or note down any Mahler Symphony played by anyone (even by me in the bathtub, conducting the duckies), I even started giving grades to the interpretationsLOL. In contrast, I only have six recordings of Dvorak's Ninth.  LOL

that's one of the funniest lines, anyone's written in a long time, Riccy...LOLLOL

seriously though, you should 'trade' one of your 6 recordings of the 9th, for one of the 7th and 8th...please...Embarrassed...although you are right in a way about 1-4; I actually like them all, and really like No 1, although I wouldn't say its anywhere near a masterpiece...Embarrassed

I really must try and get into Mahler again some time..but I do find his symphonies very hard work... I used to own 5, 6 & 7 about 10-12 years ago, but gave up on them...Ouch

Personally, I consider it a masterpiece. Five distinctive singer-songwriter pieces with unusual feels, an interesting acoustic sound and superb vocals, a stabbing progressive-punk piece, a monstrous Van Der Graaf Generator song and German Overalls, which basically defies classification. The lyrics are simply incredible. The production is probably awful from a technical standpoint, but that only lends further intimacy.

Can you believe that despite my affinity for the Scorpions I have never heard anything from UFO?

Also, I went to one of my CD stores today and asked about Soft Machine's Third album.  They didn't have it in stock.  However, I was in luck and found it for a good price on Ebay tonight, so it will hopefully be in my possession this week.

Not bad at all. Actually once you accept the fact that Robert Smith is not gonna change much and The Cure will endure,,,,then it is most enjoyable. I would say a good cross between the poorish 2004 ( The Cure) and the lighter Wild Mood Swings. 3 out of 5. Good energy, not the best quality production sound wise but without the personnel of the Bloodflowers lineup the sound would lose some of those bigger atmospheres. Worth gettingThumbs Up

Has he replaced everyone? Surely Simon has got to be in the band still.

I sort of lost interest after Boris and Porl left. Porl came back for a bit, though. Is he still on this one?
