Cynic haven't proved a whole lot yet, so for now it has to be Death. I think what Death did was more important than what Cynic did, but only time can tell. That being said I enjoy both Cynic's album, even though they are extremely different, almost two different bands doing 2 albums.

I don't know man. That's a real tough choice.
I mean, a cynic is no fun to party with, but on the other hand, death just sort of puts an end to everything.

This poll is actually really tough for me, but I think that Death is SLIGHTLY better at what they do than Cynic is at what they do. If Cynic releases their 3rd album in less than 15 years from now, then I'll know for sure. But for now, my answer is Death. Human and TSoP are some of my favorite metal albums of all time. Oh, and all hail the almighty Chuck Schulinder! (R.I.P.) Easily one of the best and most innovative musicians in the last 20 years.

Having only heard the latest Cynic album, and nothing of Death, this is one I'm going to have to opt out of I'm afraid.

Nice poll-
Death has MORE material so that's the basis of my vote-
Both equally awesome bands!

I actually have almost all of Deaths albums and I like Focus more than most of them... but there isn't much Cynic and they get old after a while. I can't decide... :(

This poll makes me want to jump off a bridge I'll have to come back later and decide. 2 serious heavy weights (excuse the pun) of metal here, both awesome.

Depends on which band you credit for writing Human.

Both are great. Death was once my favorite band (when I was a metalhead). But now, I do prefer Cynic by a million miles or so.

I own only one album of both bands (Traced In Air & Individual Thought Patterns) but I really like both bands. I can't really decide which of these two albums I prefer and definitely not which band I prefer. So, no vote for me now, but maybe when I've listened to more music from both bands.

Both pretty much pioneered Progressive Death Metal, both having phenomenal musicians on every album (yes, even early Death albums have great musicianship despite the songwriting being less mature) and both extremely enjoyable to listen to. However, because none of their 90s album are weak and their catalogue is just brilliantly eclectic, Death wins my vote.
