I have noticed that more and more people are relying too much on the Auto-censor to bleep-out swear words.

The problem with that is the addition of asterisks into the word doesn't actually hide or conceal the original word - type 'f**k' and even a dim-witted myopic penquin can still see what the word was supposed to be - so what's the point?

The way the Auto-censor works is a simple look-up table - all the banned words are on one column and all the replacement words are on the other. Someone types a banned word and the auto-censor substitutes the replacement. At the moment all the substitution words are the originals with '*' added.

I propose we swap all the substitution words in the Auto-censor with something completely innocuous and un-euphemistic - something so totally silly and ridiculous that whatever message using the swear word was supposed to send is made completely harmless... words like 'cuddle', 'fluffy' and 'tickle'

Solves two problems in one go and offends no one. Big smile

fine but you realize someone bent on using a word will simply write it in another way and avoid the whole fluffing thing altogether

Agreed.....i never liked people around me using swear words...it doesn't add anything to a discussion or in writing except showing most of the time the lack of class of the person using them.

I never thought it was ''cool'' talking  or writing like that anyway ! Great point , Dean

Well, on other forums I've seen the funniest things, like the use of 'fcuk', 'beotch', or even having the irst part of the word 'cocktail' asteriskedLOL. Personally, I never use swear words when I post, and very rarely in real life, so I wouldn't be affected at all. I like the suggestion of using 'fluffy', 'cuddle' and 'tickle' anyway - they make me think of kittiesHeart!

Here's my post from another forum, showing how they implemented a similar idea:

You know, I've seen another method (I don't know if it'd be easy to implement here):

One website I frequent gives each user the option of blocking profanity (in which case, the word is completely asterisked out), or showing the profanity in all it's low-brow glory.

This way those who may be offended can have it their way, and those who don't appreciate censorship can have it theirs.

I just rememberd a beautiful show opener from Billy Connoly, which went something like this:

"I have to warn you that there will be a lot of swearing. I swear a lot. If there are any members in the audience that are easily offended by profanity: F... off!"   Big smile

Well, does this device work for profanities in other linguages than English? Because I know a lot of nasty words in spanish, italian, german (not mentioning my own mother tongue, French linguage). F****EDIEU !

IMHO a bad idea. No need to use "bad" words too often, but sometimes they could look quite natural.

If we replace them with something senseless, words will not disappear from the language. Show me at least one person who learned these words reading PA pages. LOL

Well, imagine, we're discussing, in some thread, Roger Waters lyrics:
"Lloyd Webber's awful stuff...
Then the piano lid comes down
And breaks his f * * k i n g fingers.
It's a miracle." LOL

And here comes Auto-censor. What f**ng for? Wink
