 Topic: IQ, which album should I start with

Hello there,
I; m new on this progarchives website. And after browsing through this site and forum, and of course downloading numerous songs Í would apreciate a little help.
I'm a huge fan of neo-prog bands like Marillion (fish era) Pendragon, Arena.
Lately I've read a lot about IQ, but I don't have any albums of them yet.
So which album should I start with and why is that album special.
If you've got other artist you think are in the same categorie as the ones mentioned above, please let me now.

Dark Matter is very well done. Sometimes I find it easiest to grab the first available disc and jump right in. Dark Matter is new and easily available.

Just to thoroughly confuse you, I'd say "The Wake" is among their most excellent - and approachable - albums.

I Concur 1. Dark Matter, 2 - Subterranea, 3 - Ever, 4 - The seventh House (these are the last four chronologically)
then buy all the rest - Tales from the lush attic, The Wake, Nom Zamo, Are you sitting Comfortably......
The first four albums have all got tracks comparable with the last four albums but overall the production isn't as good (and on Nom Zamo and Are you sitting comfortably - a different singer (more poppish songs)....

I'm not convinced that 'Dark Matter' is their best.The 'retro' feel to it is quite nice and reminds me of seventies hammond/moog based prog BUT I think IQ carved out their own niche on 'Ever' and 'The Seventh House' which is why I prefer those more.Maybe sitting somewhere between the 2 schools is 'Subterranea' which has the power of 'The Seventh House' and 'Ever' but with the conceptual approach of 'traditional' prog.But there isn't a bad IQ album.My ranking of IQ studio albums would be something like: 1.Ever 2.The Wake (rough and ready but I love it) 3.The Seventh House 4.Subterranea 5.Tales From The Lush Attic 6.Dark Matter 7.Are You Sitting Comfortably? These are the 3-5 star albums IMO.Nomzamo and Seven Stories... are not bad albums by any stretch but are probably best collected when you become a fan.
Don't forget the live albums though.'Forever Live' is excellent and acts as a compilation pre 1992 so might be a good place to start.

I would have gone with "Ever" first and definitely left "Dark Matter" for later. I think that's an album you can only appreciate if you have a few of their other albums,or ideally,have been a fan for a long time. It's not bad but it just doesn't have that classic IQ feel to me. "Ever" on the other hand I regard as their most perfect and consumate piece of music, and from there I would have proceeded with "Subterranea". I would absolutely not have gone with "Subterranea" as a first choice since it's a bit overwhelming for the first time listener. Try "Ever" first as an excellent introduction,then "Subterranea",then "The Seventh House",then "Dark Matter" and then skip back to the 80's albums. And don't forget the brilliant "Subterranea" dvd,the stage performance brings the story vividly to life. I almost envy you hearing IQ for the first time,I wish I could go back 19 years and relive the moment I heard "The Wake" for the first time!

The rule of thumb says, never start with the best album. In this case, Ever. Start with Dark Matter or The Seventh House, and if you enjoy them, then you have even better moments (Ever, Subterranea) ahead.

Good point I guess but if you're not completely bowled over by the first album you hear you might get discouraged and not bother with the rest. That's happened to me at least!

IQ hooked me with 'The Wake'. It's an early album but it has 'Widow's Peak' on it which is an absolute stonker of a tune.
American English translation of 'stonker' = very good.

Thanks for the advice, I've rushed to the record store in my home town, and obviously there were no copies of any IQ album available, so I've had to order one.
together with the songs Ive downloaded, and the record ratings and reviews by various analists on this site I've desided to start with Dark Matter, also as one respondend said it would be the easiest one to find in an average reord store.
I'm sure I will have my first IQ album within a week ( I will try out some record stores in the big city).
I will add my review after I've listened to the album (don't be mad if I don't like it).
With many thanks Tuxon, I'll leave this opic open for I don't now how to close it and maybe some of you will have some interesting remarks I might want to know about.
