panic ensemble - leaded by Roy Yarkoni from Ahvak (an Israeli avant rock group). Roy Yarkoni is a very prolific musician, who has a wide range of influences and acts. Now he formed the panic ensemble, which contain players on rock instruments, but also viola and trumpet, and the lead (female) vocalist Yael Kraus. Their lyrics comes from texts about panic and how to deal with it. musically they merge a lot of influences such as rock, tango, jewish-klazmer-eastern europin music, and more...
not very complicated in structure terms, but its elaborate and beautiful music anyway. recommanded for those who liked Ahvak, as well as for those who didnt like it much... I saw them on stage and really enjoyed. They published their first CD at earsay lable.

ECCENTRIC ORBIT - Attack of the Martians
http://www.eoband.com/ Eclectic, keyboards dominated instrumental prog. BURST - Lazarus Bird Awesome extreme prog metal (ok, not that extreme, but for some people it is). HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE - Fields / Church Of Broken Glass Another great release from these metal band which seems to veer more into heavy-prog and keyboards-drenched territories. |

The Owl Service (feat. ex member(s) of Mellow Candle.)
"The Owl Service formed through a mutual love of British films and television of the 1960s and 70s, the great outdoors and (of course) the sound of the English folk revival. No retro obsessives, The Owl Service simply believe that music production peaked around 1969 and they merely seek to perfectly encapsulate the influence of the greatest albums and artists of the time. Beautiful music, simply arranged, exquisitely executed and captured on tape with authentic warmth - prepare to be enchanted by The Owl Service." MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/theowlservice |

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I would recommend the band Touchstone with the album Discordant Dreams. Probably falls into the NeoProg or Crossover classification. From the UK with shared male/female lead vocals. Kim Seviour as the female lead really kicks it. Think it would be a good additon to the Prog Archives.

I've been listening a lot to the track "Terrapin Station" by the Grateful Dead from the album of the same name for the first time since about the time it was initially released back in 1977.
I have to say that this is quite an impressive work. It is a side long cut from that album that progresses through several nicely related themes from start to finish. The sound is pure Grateful Dead, but it clearly borrows ideas from various prog groups of the time as well as symphonic elements including nice orchestral and choral accents towards the end. Now clearly the Grateful Dead were not a prog band by any stretch, yet they were highly experimental and very talented musicians. Garcia and Robert Hunter are reknowned composers to many as well. But "Terrapin Station" is clearly the Dead's attempt at something that is indeed essentially progressive rock through and through. My impression is that this may well stand up in regards to artistic merit with some of the best progressive rock opuses of the time. It compares favorably to the likes of Suppers Ready, Nine Feet Underground, Gates Of Delirium, Eruption, and Thick As a Brick. My recollection of the piece from back then stood in my mind as something uniquely unlike the norm for the Dead and more like many other progressive rock classics of the time. I think the ommision of this particular work on this site for general review to date is a major one. Wondering what others think? |

Svartbag - s/t (2008)
Danish trio Svartbag (Danish for “gull”) was formed in 2002 and has created music that incorporates the raw essence of rock with the hypnotic-like effect of electronics. The trio consists of the two guitarists, Niels Ladefoged and A.REX who also handle samplers and electronics and the third member, Peter Kyed who is in charge of electronics and real sound samplings. In this album they are reinforced on 4 of the tracks by the presence of drummer Andreas Hauer-Jensen.
Taking its influences from krautrock, psychedelic-rock, shoegaze and minimalism, Svartbag present an intriguing view of their musical vision: dark and gripping rich-sounding repetitive tunes, pleasant yet eerie; on a mission to isolate the listener from its environment and surround him with powerful and controlling patterns and sounds. Svartbag’s Myspace offers this fitting description of the album: “Svartbag’s music can best be described as sonic drones, analogue noise and repetitive space-rock with a touch of ambient and electronica.” There is not much wait, no slow buildup; rather it faces you head on (though not in a bombastic or overly aggressive way) and steals you away from your reality into their musical scenery. It is in fact epic-like, not in length but in scope, in what they achieve with their five compositions, which is a haunting atmosphere, a compelling entourage of sounds. The richness of sound, the flow of each track, the well played and composed tunes, the rhythms and varying moods and influences all sum up synergistically to a fabulous listening experience; one that makes me eager to listen to it again and again. When talking about the magic in music, that something indescribable that grabs you and takes you away from your physical self, this is to me that kind of music. Svartbag is one of those albums that caught me from first listen. It’s refreshingly well-done and well-balanced. A highly enjoyable and recommended release. |
