Hey, I was wondering what websites were good/effective for promoting your music online; Offering free downloads and sharing with other musicians, things of that nature. Can any of you other musicians help me out?

MySpace works pretty well for all of that.

before myspace became the standard, soundclick was used alot. I'm not sure if it offers alot more than myspace but it's completely music based rather than more of the mixed social / whatever that myspace is. Another older resource is garageband (the site not the program) which offers lots of review chances from other musicians. I think the standard for selling CDs online for independents is still CD Baby. Those are the sites I've used. Others may give other ideas.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

How do you download music from myspace? Ever since they changed the music interface I can't seem to download anything. Maybe I am too sleepy...
music.download.com used to be cool, but they seem to be on holiday or are just ignoring me. soundclick is good because your song is up right away lastfm looks a bit promising |

Myspace is the most famous but it sounds really bad and for prog rock, as prog rock songs are often quite long, it's a real problem that we can't upload mp3 bigger than 10 mo!
I tried a lot of sites, PureVolume, Soundclick, Virb, Audiostreet, Showcase Your Music and more but actually my favourite one is ReverbNation There's different mp3 players, some cool widgets, a lot of stats... Give it a try ;) |

Thanks for the suggestions. I like last.fm al lot for this sort of thing. I'm wary about uploading music to myspace because I know that when you put something on facebook you lose the rights to what you put on (pictures, music, words). I'm worried that if I put a song on myspace they'll sell it without even asking!

Just a few demos ... still I'm glad about everyone who listens to them. The more people listen, the more the tracks appear in their automated radio player, which in turn means that more people listen to them etc.. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - November 18 2008 at 12:13 |

It says "you have the right" which means you can upload your own songs for them to basically broadcast your songs. You do not loose the rights to your songs.
Otherwise all those major labels and artists who are online on all community websites would be giving away their crown jewels. Bottom line is they wont pay you Royalties. That'll be £250 please Advice is free! Correct advice... well?? Edited by Q6 - November 18 2008 at 13:03 |

ReverbNation is really the best! There's a lot of reason for this!!
But about Facebook, I read some articles about this copyright problem, it's the same for text and photographs... I don't really know what to think... |

It doesn't say if you still have any rights to your music or not, but anyway they have the right to do just about anything they like with it. |
