Topic: The Official 2008-2009-2010 NHL Thread Posted: October 09 2008 at 10:39 |
Tonight kicks off the 2008-2009 NHL Season. For those lucky few that have the VS cable station, the NHL Season kicks off with the defending Stanley Cup Champions hosting their long-time Original Six rival the Toronto Maple Leafs. What a great way to kick off the season, and yet a shame that it will be the only visit from Toronto again this year. In an attempt to mimic the NFL the NHL is kicking off the season with a rock concert from British Arena Rock band Def Leppard. Although not prog, I know that there are at least some of my fellow proggers that enjoy or grew up on Def Leppard.
Anyhow, as I did last year, I have created this thread this year for us hockey fans to talk about all things hockey. Let's Go Red Wings!!!!! and watch out for that puck .

They are actually having the concert at the Fox Theater which is down the street from the game at Joe Louis Arena. It is my understanding that Def Leppard is going to kick off the opening ceremony with their new song C'Mon C'Mon which they will play at the Fox, but it will be broadcast on the screen at the Joe and also on VS. They are then supposed to show the game and banner raising ceremony on the big screen at the Fox Theater so the fans that couldn't get tickets at the Joe can watch the ceremony and the game. After the game Def Leppard is supposed to perform their concert.
My boss has season tickets and I was hoping that I might be able to go with him, but I didn't make the cut this year. I'm probably not going to the concert, although that is still an outside possibility. I will probably be watching the game and whatever they show of the concert from home.

As far as Montreal goes, I know that they were really good last year but disappointed in the playoffs. I suspect that they are going to be in the mix again this year. I'm not really too familiar with them though. Being in the Eastern Conference, the Wings rarely play them so I am not sure how good they are or for that matter what improvements they made in the offseason.

With all the time I spend here who could blame him. Opening day is pretty big and he has a big family and some important clients so they take priority over me. Generally, I am pretty lucky and I am able to go to 4 or 5 games a year. Last year, I was able to go to game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals with him and that was extremely awesome. I went to opening day last year, but I bought the tickets a week before the game when I was down there for an exhibition game. I didn't make it to any exhibition games this year, and because of the banner ceremony the tickets sold out pretty quickly.

The Canadiens have a really good chance at making it to the finals if Price plays well in the playoffs. MOst of the goalies I play with rave about his stance being near perfect.
Avs look like the same team as last year, no Forsberg yet. They should make the playoffs again this year.

Go Sharks... hopefully the new coach and a revamped blueline will get these guys past the second round. Although I think the focus of the revamp was wrong. Rivet, Carle and McLaren gone...Errorhoff and Vlasic still there. 3.5 million a year for 3 years on a guy (Errorhoff) who is a virtually guarenteed 10-15 defensive zone turnover per game guy.

I thought they could've made it to the finals last year. Blake should be a big help. It's pretty much an even trade for losing Cambell.

Yeah, it was the first time that I've had a chance to see the Wings play in the Finals. I've seen them play in the playoffs before and those games are quite electric, but with the Finals the electricity in the building was amped up even more. Surprisingly, there were quite a few Penguins fans that were able to get tickets too.

Campbell was a microcosm of the Sharks as a team. Great regular season, playoff no-show. That spin-o-rama thing was cute the first time when he scored a goal, but downright embarrassing the few times he tried it in the playoffs and got put on his butt.

I've got the picture-in-picture guy's sports heaven going right now with two 3 to 1 games going on. The Phillies lead the Rays 3 to 1 in the 5th inning of game 1 of the World Series, and Keith Tkachuk just scored a power play goal for the St. Louis Blues to bring them within 3 to 1 of the Red Wings. Go Wings!!!

Hossa doesn't look comfortable, yet.
Conklin looks good. I wonder if he'll replace Ozzy this year?
Hmmm

Feebs, should be glad to know that I am forgoing my beauty sleep in order to watch the Wings play in Anaheim. They currently lead the Ducks 2-1 with about 5:30 minutes to go in the 2nd period.
Correction: Zetterberg just scored a power play goal and the Wings now lead 3-1 with 3:30 to go in the 2nd period.
Correction #2: Teemu Selanne just scored his second 5 on 3 goal of the game to make the score 3-2 going into the 2nd intermission.
Correction #3: Teemu Selanne now has a hat trick and the game is tied 3-3.
Correction #4: Bryan Sotheby has scored for the Ducks and they now lead 4-3 with about 5 minutes to go in the game.
Correction #6: The Wings just got hosed on an overtime goal that was knocked in with a high stick. The refs allowed the goal and the Ducks win 5-4.

Hmmm. I haven't stopped in this thread in a few weeks; and neither has anyone else for that matter. The Wings are up visiting our friends in the Great White North again with a stopover in Calgary. The last time the Red Wings were shut out, was last year by Calgary and Mikka Kiprusoff (sp?) A few minutes in to the game, and there will be no shut out tonight, as the Red Wings lead 1 - 0.

You'd think with all of the Canadians on this site, including the owner, there would be more hockey fans, but it seems that most of the hockey fans on here are from the good old US of A.

The Red Wings scored a couple of late goals and an empty netter to beat the Calgary Flames 5 to 2. Next up is a visit to King By-Tor and the Vancouver Canucks on Monday. According to our broadcast, Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo injured his groin this afternoon, so is not likely to play on Monday.

yeah, he got injured when they were playing the Pens. Shame, they won the game, but lost at the same time.
