Thank you for the clappies. Us 30-somethings seem to be pretty small group, but I think that we needed somewhere else to have "random conversations". |
Ooh, you need more Todd. And more Zappa! I've been enjoying the first Utopia album recently. It's like the stereotypical idea people have of what prog rock is - vaguely mystical, slightly pompous, lots of twiddly-woo synths and guitar bravado, and a track that lasts half an hour. But I love it anyway! 'Overnite Sensation' is a good 'un re. Zappa (except for that annoying 'Dinah Moe Humm' song - I always skip that!!). 'Montana' is possibly my favourite song of all time. Random conversations are great. What amuses me is how James manages to occupy all three rooms. Is that how he keeps his posting rate so stratospheric...?

Have fun James! I hope there's an 'obscure music' round...

I at least post in here and in Suede depending on who's online, but you really have to be from the UK to know what the hell is going on in the Shed.

I see that James is in the home stretch to 50000 posts. I think that his post counter is just constantly turning sort of like the milage gauge on a car. Even being at the pub, he is still on-line.

Pat, I'll be curious to see your thoughts on that Flower Kings CD that you are listening to right now. I think that the "old" Pat might have liked that one. I'm not so sure that the "new" Pat who is under the influence of RIO will like it that much though.

Nothing's changed, really, just when I visited this site I had pretty much zero exposure to prog outside of Rush, Yes, DT, KC, and ELP. I initially tried getting into bands like the Flower Kings and Spock's Beard, but even before I heard a note of Canterbury or RIO they really weren't resonating with me that well (particularly SB's debut album, which gets the rare (from me) 1 star). Happened to stumble upon and test out Canterbury, then moved onto RIO/Avant and Zeuhl, and everything clicked. edit: that said, I like to revisit bands from time to time just to see how my feeling towards them are. TFK have almost all of their albums on emusic, so that made it an easy sell. Did you check out 4/3 de Trio yet?

So far I'm still pretty happy sticking with the areas of prog that I enjoy. I've put my toe in the water on some of the other genres and there is definitely some good stuff in the other genres, but I haven't really found anything that makes me want to explore them that much further. There are still so many bands within the genres that I know that I like that I still have to explore.
I haven't checked out 4/3 de Trio yet. The hard drive on my computer is virtually full, so I avoided adding anything this weekend. I decided to stop at Office Depot on my way home from hanging out with Elmo last night and buy an external hard drive. I installed it this morning, so I'll probably play with it tomorrow, and try downloading some files to it. I'm not sure exactly how it is going to work. I'm tempted to cut and paste all of the music from the old hard drive to the new hard drive, but I am afraid that iTunes won't be able to find the files and that I would have to go in and remap everything. I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

I was able to use 20 Pepsi Stuff points to download the 4 songs from the Thieves' Kitchen album Argot. So far so good.

That reminds me, I still haven't got their new album. I was supposed to be getting a free copy from the bassists girlfriend who I know personally...
I must contact her sometime and see if she still has it!

Oh yeah, you'll love Thieves' Kitchen. I'd like to get their newest as well, I think I have their debut but rarely listen to it.
