I haven't gone back through all of responses to see if anybody else mentioned this, but Sid was one of the greatest lyricists of his day.  Let's remember him for that rather than for his tragic breakdown.

James Dean Syndrome. Never realized his potential. Some sources even say it wasn`t the LSD but a dormant medical condition.

Syd didnt make Piper, the drugs did. Give me a couple hits of LSD and a guitar and Ill could probably come up with something that sounds just as 'interesting' as Interstellar Overdrive. Not to be-little Piper, its the best psychedelic album around, but like many others, I dont understand its creators genius status.

Its his story thats so compelling, he represents the dark side of the idealism of the 60's.

I think that Syd Barrett is a 'legend', because he first made innovations in music and later on 'disappeared', because of his mental state. The disappearing has something mythical and makes him hard to reach, which also made him a legend.

I don't get the buzz about him,
One theory I have centers around feeling a part of it, but I could be wrong. To that end but I'm sure in five years time people will stop getting Kurt Cobain and then another five for Doherty maybe.
Did you have to be there for Syd to seem so good ?

I love lots of Prog, I like every Pink Floyd album From Atom Heart Mother onwards, but the wilderness years and especially the whole Piper Era just don't do it for me.

Yup.  Definite genius, and it has nothing to do with drugs or that other nonsense.  He is mentioned all the time by musicians as a huge influence for his talent, songwriting, and guitar playing, all amazing for their time (and for now, frankly). 

His brief 3 albums of work put so much of today's predictable prog-tripe to shame.  They are incredible and he will always be one of my favorite artists, for his work, not for his "life story."

Yes he dies recently, but he has almost vanished for 30 something years.
 
Imagine this, Pink Floyd or er Waters Concert, the lights fade a fat Dave  or an aged Roger play Shine on You Crazy Diamond and at the end a huge photo of the eternal young  Syd Barrett., the comet that was too bright, the star that burn too fast , with the musicians calling him, "you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper,You prisoner, and shine!" And people who never heard him plus  probably good percentage who not even heard about him before, shouting as lunatics in some kind of cult to the fallen  hero not ready for this cruel world in the middle of amazing lasers..
 
I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, but please, all that paraphernalia means instant status of legend.
