Top 5 Proto Prog Albums!!!!!!!!!
These are the albums that began the prog movement in rock and all prog bands owe their allegiance to these incredible artists who were innovative before innovation was a key word in prog.
Lets start with mine - I have them all and this was easy as the first ones that popped into my skull were
1 Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beatles
2 Who's Next - The Who
3 Days of Future Passed - Moody Blues
4 Made In Japan - Deep Purple
5 The Doors - The Doors
Special mention to the track 'In A Gadda Da Vida' - Iron Butterfly

3. Beatles - Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. The Doors - The Doors
5. Surrealistic Pillows - Jefferson Airplane
As you'll have seen, all of the above are from before 1969. That year King Crimson released In The Court Of The Crimson King - and the term Proto-Prog, if taken seriuosly, could no longer be used.

I don't know who is exacly ''proto-prog-'' but looking at the lists above, i get the idea 
-Beatles: Sergent Peppers

-Deep purple: In rock......................is this ''proto prog'' DP.???.....sounds like Hard rock to me!

Well, lemme think...
1. Quadropheania...is a cheat, good sir, a cheat, since the Who did this in NINETEEN SEVENTY FRIGGIN' THREE. Anyways, Quad is still among my absolute favorite albums of all time, so give it some props no less.
2. Strange Days...is just about the most perfect album ever. Everything flows perfectly, all the songs are good, the concept is solid but the variety is there too, even the cover fits the mood. If only it weren't so short...
3. Procol Harum...had a debut. And it was amazing. Quite possibly the most underrated band of all time...you know, outside of a garage, where the REAL geniuses work.
4. Music in a Doll's House...is an album by Family, which is a band that I did not set out to like, but ended up liking all the same, and this fine, fine album turned out to be one of the best products of the sixties that I'd ever heard. Fancy that.
5. Pets Sounds...has balls of steel it does! Hoo boy. If this album ain't art, then I don't know what is; but no matter what, it's beautiful. It also means that my list starts and ends with albums that really shouldn't be on it! HA!

1. Burn-Deep Purple
2. In Rock-Deep Purple

Since I don't agree with the archives uidelines for protoprog I will list albums that I see suitable.
1. The Doors -Strange Days
2. Velvet Underground- Velvet Underground & Nico (Not listed in the archives but a lot more progressive than a lot of bands that are!)
3. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
4. Tim Buckley - Goodbye and Hello (listed as prog folk, released in 1967 so...)
5. The Beatles - Revolver (like proto-protoprog)

This is a one of a kind list  !!!!!!!.....Are you sure of that???
The beat goes on?????...not Renaissance or their first album?
Full Circle??? better than any Morrison-led Doors???
DP- Concerto??/ the best early DP??
What is The Who on tour???/never seen this one??
I don't know Ball, so icannot judge this one!

Iron Butterfly's Ball is an interesting choice. Don't think I'd put in any top 5 list, but In the Time of Our Lives is a pretty good song, as is Soul Experience. I no longer have the album, but I have a greatest hits that has those two songs and they are above par for the course. Strange band, that Iron Butterfly.

IMO Tommy is far better than most of this albums, but I don't believe The Who are Proto Prog).
