In a way my situation was similar, although 20 years earlier. Moving Pictures was the first Rush album released while I was listening to music. I heard Tom Sawyer and Limelight on the radio and didn't like either song. 90125 was the first Yes album while I was listening to music, and I didn't really care for Owner of a Lonely Heart which was splattered all over the radio. My tastes might have been better then, since I like Owner now. I didn't actually get into Rush until Presto was released, and Yes until Union was released and by then I was able to go back and get the back categories.
I just had a lot less music to listen to back then so I would listen to those album all of the time, and now of course I listen to them with nostalgia.

Good choice. I'm in here because I'm feeling old and crotchety about the Suede Room not appreciating Genesis enough.

Pity, thought we were going to have a nice Phil Miller mutual appreciation society in here.

Not much, Canterbury seems to be the current flavor in here.

In a round about way I am listening to Krautrock, since RPWL is a German band, but they are actually listed under Neo prog, and they owe their lineage to Pink Floyd.

Yeah, that's understandable. I'm glad I didn't grow up in the 80s. The first song that truly hit me was "Red Sector A" by Rush, actually. That was... a bit more than 4 years ago now.

Haha, having failed yet again to commit witty repartee, I am outta here... and this time I'd better go to sleep, yes?! Might make for a better standard of conversation from me tomorrow, if nothing else... Good night!

There was nothing wrong with growing up in the 80's; I enjoyed my hair metal, glam rock, hard rock and thrash metal just fine. There wasn't all that much happening in the world of prog, except for the Neo movement, which I don't think was even a blip in the good ol' U.S. of A., but I didn't really get into that until the late 80's anyhow, and that was via visiting the back catalogues of the prog giants.

I've been a huge prog freak for 4 years now, so I don't have that long a history of liking other music. I'm ashamed to admit I even "liked" some of the stuff I did when I was really young, but that's because I didn't know of anything else.
