I do think PA should have maybe one or two more samples on there for TD though... they've evolved alot over the years while still maintaining their sound so it's tough to represent most of it with only 2 samples (the last one is from their 1980s album, Exit, which I see as one of their weakest... it's the closest they ever came to like an Abacab except not nearly as bad).

I'm in the minority where I think my favorite album is Interview (in my top 10 of all time probably), but I also really like Acquiring the Taste, Octopus, Free Hand, The Power... Hell, they're all good.

I especially have a soft spot for the Missing Piece as well. Embarrassed

Civilian and Giant for a Day not so much.

I am relatively new to GG (i.e. within the last 3 to 5 years, I forget exactly).  The only studio album I don't have yet is Three Friends.  It is really kind of dumb because I have only listened to most of the CDs a few times each.  I enjoyed some of the songs more than others and overall I thought they were pretty good, but for some reason I really haven't "explored" them that much with frequent listens.  I can tell you what their albums are but I honestly couldn't name any of their songs or differentiate between the songs.  That is the problem with buying too much music.  I don't listen to the new stuff enough before I move on to the next batch or the next retro listening excusion occurs.

I know exactly what you mean there. There are still bands I've bought or heard once a while ago that I still haven't gotten around to re-visiting. I will one of these days though.

Maybe this discussion is what you need to put them on and enjoy it more this time around. Wink

I have a subscription to Progression magazine, which is a pretty cool quarterly journal, if you aren't familiar with it.  Plug over.  Anyhow, they had a special issue a while back that celebrated the 35th anniversary of Gentle Giant, so this must have been in 2005.  I'd barely heard of the band, let alone knew anything from them.  The articles were very interesting though and since they re-released all of the CDs to celebrate the 35th Anniversary I was able to pick up a bunch of them at the local brick and mortar stores for a pretty decent price. 
 
I guess it is hard to feel the nostalgia for an old band like this that I plain had never heard of until 3 or 4 years ago, and although I enjoyed what I heard it just doesn't have that lived in feel that bands like Rush, Yes, and ELP have, that I have been listening to for 20 years now.  Who knows, maybe 20 years from now, I will feel the same nostalgia that the long-time fans have or on the other hand I might be more interested in the Yes 60th Anniversary reunion tour.

That's easy to understand. Being a younger generation prog fan has given me the advantage of being able to approach prog from the mid-late 1960s and prog from this year in the same nostalgic light (most of the time, though I do have bands I've known for longer), but it has the drawback of not giving me the full understanding of how the album sounded when it came out at the time. I can only imagine that some of them must have been extremely groundbreaking.

I also have availability to band's entire discographies while fans of Rush had to wait for each release. I suppose that also has pros and cons.
