The Shed

 

The gig was organised by the Classic Music Society and I have to say that they did a mighty fine job. The venue was excellent with great acoustics. The venue is a local community centre and the hall we were in had a half and half of standing area and pull out tiered seating. I'd done my back in earlier in the day so was glad of the seating - Awwww. Anyway it gave me a chance to watch the chap at the controls who did a absolutely splendid job. Well done indeed.

 

Anyway the gig was really good. The support band was from the other side of the Pennines, Combination Head, and, though not quite my cup of tea, carried out a solid performance. The Reasoning performed a mix of numbers from Awakening and Dark Angel albums - I quite like their triple vocalist arrangements which harmonise well.

 

I hadn't heard of the CRS which came to my attention as a result of Jared's thread on up and coming gigs - so well done J you done well as they say. If I can also put in a plug for the CRS as well they certainly get some great bands. Unfortunately I didn't see J's thread until a few days ago and I was too late to see RPWL. But more than made up for it as in my sweatty palm I now have a ticket for Pendragon's gig on the 1st Nov. Can't wait. I'll also put off buying Pure until the gig.

 

Finally it's only half an hour travelling away, so can't be bad. Though I must say that you have to like roundabouts a lot - there must have been at least 8 in a 3-4 mile section between the motorway and the venue. I thought I'd been transported darn sarrff for a while. .

Thanks for the story Dean on bump starting. It brought back lots of memories of my old Vauxhall Chevette. I had to put in (actually my Dad helped me) about 3 starter motors in the three years I had it. It wasn't exactly a banger but had seen better days.

 

Anyway, being a bit skint at the time I couldn't replace the starter straight away. Apparrently the fault was an electrical contact problem and with the aid of a half inch spanner around the thingummyjig you could turn the discumbobulator a few degrees and get contact. Hey presto it worked and started fine. Anyway after a while the points of good contact got scarcer and scarcer and needed to be bumped off. It ended that to avoid pushing I usually parked at the top of a rise and bumped it off myself. One good thing you can say about the old Chevette was that it was brilliant at bump starting - none of this engine management crap you get these days.

we've all been there...

 

back in the early '90's, I had one of those awful Ex BT canary yellow Maestro vans, which didn't ask for permission before it de-charged its battery.  Once, I parked it on top of a steep mountain pass in sub-Snowdonia, while I went off walking for the day.  When I returned at 6pm to start the ignition...nothing...not a sausage.  Now you might think that being at the top of a mountain pass, 2000ft above sea level with steep roads into the adjacent valleys in both directions, would be an ideal place to have a flat battery....

 

except that I had to get the thing up a gradient in the car park first; something I just couldn't do on my own... a realisation which dawned on me, when exhausted, I allowed the vehicle to roll back on me, gathering momentum towards a 'ditch' of course grass, from which it would have to be recovered....

 

needless to say, by 6pm, the small car park, surrounded by wilderness, was already vacant, and I had to wait for over 30 mins to flag down a passing car for help...I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been the last one passing, that day....

 

Some years ago I owned a Yugo 45 which needed a bumpstart every morning - my sister would sit in the driving seat and I'd push it along until the engine turned over. She also used it from time to time, and on one occasion bumped into a wall and dented one of the wings. She was worried that I'd be angry, and I was - if she'd written it off I could have put the insurance money towards something better, like a 1973 Allegro or maybe a Morris Marina.

 

 

 

I think you ought to get Alex to pop 'em in a large plastic mixing bowl, and squash 'em with her feet..
