looking for ideas

 

I'm new on here and hope to get some new perspective on prog music in general and some ideas as to where to expand my musical horizons.

 

I have quite a broad range of musical tastes. My favourite band is actually Chicago, and I particularly like their first 7 albums, some of which could possibly be "mistaken" for prog type music if you ask me.

From a prog perspective I particularly like Marillion, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, and Kansas. Never grown to like bands like VdGG or Dream Theater as much, perhaps because of the - to me - unattractive vocals and they like the musical warmth found with the aforementioned bands. Maybe I could get some good pointers. Recently got myself into some of the excellent Italian prog out there - stunning!

 

I have posted my top 190 songs in the top 10 sub-forum for anyone that's interested.

 

 

 

My favourite prog band is Rush (prefer 1st & 2nd phases), though I like a lot of different genres of music, from traditional horn-heavy ska (my first love), thru reggae & dub to classical works like Shostakovich's symphonies; from Tangerine Dream and other electro/ambient artists and the complex chilled out patterns of the Modern Jazz Quartet to the hard driven punk of bands like Rancid ; from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Qawwali to (the awkward to classify!) Camper Van Beethoven ... I just like what I like, and I'm willing to give an most things a fair listen before I'd condemn them to the pop/pap/pointless category. 

 

Must say that I've spent the last week going through these archives & listening to the "Free Download MP3 Streams" in each of the prog sub-genres ...didn't realise just how many bands there are out there that come under the broad prog bracket.   For any newbie who hasn't already done so, I'd recommend checking them out -  I've found some fascinating & unexpected new directions to investigate further.  To be honest, I hadn't even heard of "Italian Symphonic Prog" before, so I'm going to have a listen to that download stream now.
