That's embarrassing on their part, geezus. I've never had a formal lesson in my life and I know my major scales AND the modes of the major scale instead out backwards, plus I know some modes of the melodic minor and harmonic minor too. There is no excuse not to know the major scale at the very least in this day and age. |

Scales (and really, any note) on the bassoon is hard. I learned the scales right away on my own. I don't think they would even know how many sharps/flats are in the scales. |

I have it from a classical music boxset. It isn't an exceptional recording. |

Scales have their different difficulties depending on the mechanics on the instrument. For eg, while the number of Sharps/Flats has a bearing on how hard it is to play a scale on a keyboard instrument, it doesn't on guitar and it's more to do with actual physical positions itself that makes certain key sigs more challening . Sounds like a Bassoon gets harder to play in increasing numbers of sharps/flats from what you say. C Major is regarded as the easier key signature to play in on a piano/organ etc, whereas on a guitar, I find G Major is the easiest to use. |

With a bassoon, the more sharps/flats, the more irregular fingerings (for example, C#/Db in the middle range needs one to press down 3 out of the 10 left thumb keys at once) hence making it harder to play. |

Ahhh okay. I love learning new stuff about other instruments:) On guitar, it's kinda hard to explain, but when I only knew the major scales (i.e without knowing modes) it just seems to make everything harder to visualize and I ended having to sorta "guess" too often while improvisation. Once I started studying the modes of the major scale and the chord relationships between them, suddenly improvisation became far more natural and I wouldn't be blindly hitting notes that didn't fit over a given chord or arpeggio. Like any instrument, guitar is as easy or as hard as you make.. choose to stop learning at a certain point and you can make yourself believe you've mastered the instrument. Never stop learning, and that's at the point you realize you'll never master an instrument. |

Those two are masterpieces, among the very best in RIO/Avant.
![]() I have Certitudes and A Great Inhumane Adventure in addition to those, as well as High Infidelity on order. I still need No 6 and C.O.D though..

Oh yeah, you were getting something to eat James, my bad.
Well, as can be seen, me and Dahlia are not talking crap for once... umm, what else? Haven't left the house all day, nor yesterday either. Recluse mode until Friday morning. Edit: Oh yeah, post direct at James and Bern. Edited by HughesJB4 - October 01 2008 at 11:56 |
