2001 was way ahead of its time and would win hands down if not for the sepia "journey into the lava lamp" ending.
Thus, I choose clockwork. ![]() |

"Clockwork Orange" is brilliant and for long time was my favourite film (Anthony Burgess didn't like treatment, becuase as I recall, he felt that the violence was too grahic and made too much a spectacle of -- I found it suitably disturbing, but the combination of black comedy and sickening violence can be off-putting). I actually like the psychedelic sequence of 2001 (when he enters the monolith). 2001 has one of my favourite scenes in film -- when Frank Poole is jogging and shadow boxing around the centrifuge past the sarcophagi. It captures the loneliness of space so well for me. So poignant. Kubrick was brilliant, and quite distinct, with his mise en scene formalism.
For those who like Clockwork Orange, I highly recommend another Malcolm McDowell film -- O Lucky Man! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GboRa4Ge2NM |

Thanks. Incidentally, your response makes me very happy. I've been involved with boards for seven years, and have mentioned it many times, and you are the first person to know it. I hope some people will check it out on youtube since I believe that the whole thing is up there. The other parts of the loose Travis "trilogy" were good too -- particularly If..., well not Britannia Hospital so much. O Lucky Man is my favourite of those. It surprises me that so few know it. I always recommend it to the sort of people who love Clockwork Orange and Brazil (my kind of people). A couple of reviews: http://www.channel4.com/film/reviews/film.jsp?id=106639 http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/review/4157/ Back to Kubrick: Of course Doctor Strangelove is terrific too, and The Shining is my favourite horror movie. |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson
