He may .not have been one of the most proficient keyboardists, but the man knew how to create an atmosphere. Welcome to the Machine still scares the crap out of me sometimes. No doubt Pink Floyd would've been something completely different without him at the keys. He's my first musical hero to die since I've gotten into prog. I hope they don't start going too quickly. :(

Very sad to hear about Richard Wright passing away. Had no clue he was sick and was
battling cancer. Seems to me all the great ones go at an early age; took me by surprise
just as when Syd Barrett died a couple of years ago. Gotta go and play all my Pink Floyd;
real big fan of them, as I have all of their stuff. God bless, and R. I. P., Rick. A one and
only of one of the biggest, or THE BIGGEST band in the world.

Sad day it is for progressive rock and music in general.
One of the few truly AMAZING bands that the mass audience like and his part in it was huge. One of the truly awesome keyboardists that did not rely much on technicality for sure.

Sad news. As someone else mentioned, he was able to create great atmosphere and was an integral part of the PF sound.

Rick's passing is a sad loss to the music world and the human race, we were blessed by his life and are deminished by his passing. Goodbye and many thanks for some of the greatest music of all time.

this is the worst news since Joe Zawinul's passing last September.
not going to repeat what others have said already, but I will add my own thoughts
Though i may not listen to Floyd much these days, they are an integral part of my music collection. They were one of the gateway (no pun intended) bands for all the great music i listen to now. They have a special place in my heart. And I always knew Wright was one of the best, and acknowledged his input from the beginning.
this will give PF's music more deeper meaning now. Especially a song like Great Gig In The Sky, which is about death, and DSOTM as a whole. Not to mention countless other Floyd tunes. Some forget that he was also the 3rd singer in the band besides Waters and Gilmour, probably because he was pushed away, vocally. Think about a song like Echoes, his voice harmonizing with Gilmour's is distinct and very unique.
IMO Pink Floyd were the most artsy prog band from the 70s. Sure the other big names were too obviously, but the Floyd had this deeper, sometimes tragic, feel to it. Kinda hard to explain, but I think a lot of you understand what I mean. So it is ironic that members of the band have been 'dropping like flies' whereas no one really significant from the original prog bands has left us (thankfully). More tradgedy for a band who has gone through so much as it is. Makes me wonder what Waters' and Gilmour's thoughts are on all this.
PF's music has made me feel happy. Made me cry. Gotten me out of depression. Freaked me out. Made me laugh. Made me wonder why that 3 headed man with the green and purple colored hair was jumping sideways while my friend's coffee table was talking to me and sticking out its tounge . Pink Floyd is one of the few bands that has made me feel so ALIVE!!! and Rick's keyboards had about 80-90% to do with it, in terms of sound. Because the layers of keys was so lush and HUGE! Waters may have been the visionary, but he knew that without Wright, PF could not be PF (The Wall, The Final Cut)
Rick Wright made good use of the 'less is more' way of making music and i respect him so much for that.
To be honest, i probably wont listen to any Floyd tonight, but tomorrow i most likely will. I need to let this sad news soak in a little first. I'll probably listen to all of DSOTM, WYWH, and Animals, as well as Echoes as these are his most shining moments. I might even listen to Gilmour's On An Island since he is featured prominently on that album (also great album BTW)
Sorry for the rambling, but i needed to let this out. Pink Floyd is one of the few bands that has my utmost respect and loyalty. I'll probably drink with my buddies tomorrow night and we'll discuss this and praise Richard Wright for everything he has done. His music is etched into my brain, and has even, dare I say, saved my life more than once.
Rest in Peace Rick Wright. You may not be here with us anymore, but as with any musician, the music lives on and on and on.

I just listened to Echoes. Those subtle and tasteful melodic synth lines coming out of the psychedelic section are simply magical. I made it without breaking down right until I heard Rick singing "So I throw the windows wide, and call to you across the sky"

Will be listening to Remember A Day today ... his first and perhaps greatest masterpiece.
Remember A Day by Richard Wright
Remember a day before today A day when you were young. Free to play alone with time Evening never came. Sing a song that can't be sung Without the morning's kiss Queen - you shall be it if you wish Look for your king Why can't we play today Why can't we stay that way Climb your favorite apple tree Try to catch the sun Hide from your little brother's gun Dream yourself away Why can't we reach the sun Why can't we blow the years away Blow away Blow away Remember Remember

Dang, the man was a wonderful pianist. I just remember watching him on "The making of Dark Side of the Moon" and seeing him how he explained some of his favorite chord progressions, and how he incorporated it into the Pink Floyd music. Learning his stuff on the piano has been nothing but joy, I absolutely love all the chords he put together.
RIP Wright.

It's very strange for the death of someone you didn't know personally to affect you in such a profound way. I read all the posts in the thread and it feels right to grieve with all of you. I was born in 1959 so PF were the music of my teenage years, my favorite band for many years. I will wait until I can get outside to a river or mountain with my Ipod and grieve some more. don't know what else to say

i had no idea Rick wright was ill... this is terrible news! When i was younger i wasnt a follower of bands as many of my friends were,i did not have pictures of rock stars or bands plastered all over my bedroom walls or nor did i even know the members of many of the bands i liked! content as i was just to listen to the music. Then along came "dark Side Of The Moon"...and it was that often gentle keyboard work in the background that became for me as much a trademark of the band as David Gilmours guitar.. Goodbye Rick.say hello to Syd when you get to the gates,we will miss you here

I didn't see it mentioned (as I skimmed the thread), but today/yesterday, the 15th, was the 33rd Anniversary release date of Wish You Were Here, arguably one of Rick's greatest accomplishments with the band.
Oddly enough, I was listening to the final two tracks on that album this morning... so sad, he will be missed greatly. In rememberance, I shall devote my music-listening entirely to Pink Floyd the rest of this week (a slight change of pace from my month-long deluge of Porcupine Tree... slight).
