Nice list, Adam.  Are you really into minimalism right now?

I'm wondering if you know much about the 1960s British contemporary scene?

I'm thinking of Cornelius Cardew, Scratch Orchestra, Michael Nyman, Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies, Alexander Goehr, John Ogdon and Elgar Howarth.

Plus later artists, such as Steve Martland.

If you do, recommendations would be appreciated.

i hadn't actually though about it, but now looking at my list it seems i am. i'm a little obsessed with Feldman at the moment. i've near twenty albums by him, but my lust for more seems insatiable, which is very unusual for me considering i usually only purchase a carefully selected number of discs per artist.

h'mmm... the sixty british scene. truthfully i don't know much. i know some of Cardew well, mainly his work Treatise released on Hathut. he was good friends with Feldman and Tilbury, come to think about it, i think it was Cardew who introduced Tilbury to Feldman; thank god he did. obviously he featured on the early AMM recordings, but his music ideologies were kind of heading at a tangent to AMM's. funnily enough listening to Treatise - which i considering to be an intriging piece - i can see much of his influence shining through in works such as AMMMusic. His solo work is a lot more precise, which is not surprising considering it is modern composition rather than improvised. it is a lot quiter, eluding more the Feldman school of thought. I hope some of that made sense, just finished writing an essay and eight cups of coffee later my brain is not functioning properly.

heard of 'The Scratch Orchestra' have not listen to them though. Sounds like something Mutant Sounds would post. as for the other composers, the names don't mean much. it has been a since listening to Steve Martland, i should dig that album i have up again. for recent music i'm far more knowledgable on the improvised scene.

Thanks, Adam.

And whilst we're talking about AMM, what are the albums like by individual members?

Principally Eddie Prévost and Keith Rowe.

Also, I gather many British jazzmen have been through the Mike Westbrook Orchestra, so at some time I plan to check out some of that as well.

By the way, there was a fascinating programme on the BBC last month about the '60s Classical Music scene and it went into a lot detail about many of the individuals I've mentioned above.

I don't think Scatch Orchestra have many any recordings... I could be wrong about this though.

I've heard some duo material from Prévost, none of which click. So, for this reason I never bothered with his solo material. As for Keith Rowe, I 've heard a ton of his music, which has spanned from amazing to average. By the time I'd grown a taste for this type of music two of the three solo discs were long out of production: A Dimension of Perfectly Ordinary Reality and Harsh, Guitar Solo. His latest work The Room I've heard in its entirity, but have yet to purchase a hard copy. The Room received a lot of positive feed back, which from what I heard, was fairly desivered. Supposedly each of his previous solo discs have mark a new evolution of style, so it should be interest to hear some new recordings from him soon. If you're interested you can listen to two sample of the album here: http://www.erstwhilerecords.com/catalog/ES001.html

re: SO, I think it was just one live performance from '69.
