Well, there is indeed a consensus of writing a review for recommendation purpose, but that's something I generally care about minimally, because I'm keen on music analysis (if my close-minded, subjective reviews were the ones that made you think WinkWink).

Generally, I don't think the function would be absolutely necessary. It's not that essential, so to say.

lol

Just to be clear, my suggestion about the Amazon.com strategy was not related to my reference to Ricochet's reviews. I just realized that it was one comment after the other, as if they were both for the same purpose. I'm really referring to reviewers who will give an album one star because they think it's 'not prog', for example.

I've quasi supported that in the past, but would also like to see a rate the raters of reviews -- "Was this rating of the review helpful to you." ;)  I'd also like to see at the board ratings of topics and posts.

The problem that I've seen before is that even a  wonderfully thoughtful "negative" review is liable to get too often rated as not helpful by too many as the "fanboys" don't like to see people be critical.  also, one will find the haters supporting negative reviews and saying that glowing reviews are unhelpful.  Various permutations. i see it as problematic: there should be strict guidelines for rating the reviews, usernames should be logged, and I would like comments (though we have this thread), but then I t would think that the reviwer should be able to respond to comments.  That said it would be an absolute pain/ huge job to monitor (as if monitoring reviews ain't enough) as abuse could be rampant, and it would be hard to catch.  I like the idea, but  not that practical methinks due to the potential for abuse.

I was  reviewer for a screenplay site before, and came up with very detailed constructive reviews of people's screenplays that took ages, and were damned good and they had to be very long (thousands of words as I recall).  I followed the format, was meticulous, but too often got "not helpful" ratings (couldn't even choose for oneself whic reviews we'd have to do, and there were some really poor ones -- in that case it was the screenplay writer who would diss one's review).

I supect that the majority of review raters will not be open-minded or objective (much less so than the reviwers).  One can be too open-minded when reviewing, and objectivity is hard (helps greatly if one is well-versed in music theory).  Being open-minded implies that one will also be open to other's criticisms, or praises, and others not liking, or loving, what one loves, or hates.

^good post, Greg.

My main point is even simpler: I don't think we should enlarge the site's purposes to review critics, when discussing prog counts most - and it is done in this forum. Any critic concerning a review can very well happen in this topic (or in the other one, but only when concerning abuse).

Try deleting your PA cookies before logging in. Also, the log in can sometimes have problems with a firewall (my zonealarm doesn't seem to like it), so you could try logging in the the firewall off, then reactivate it.

I was wondering what that popupcontrol thing was, how do I go about fixing this, I didn't think I had a firewall judging my some other sites I'm able to visit, lol. another poster suggested I delete my PA cookies? I know what cookies are, but how I do I specifically delete them from this site?? Please bare with my somewhat computer incompetence, lol, thx guys. I also post on plenty other boards, never had this problem. _popupControl();

Best if you raise this in "Report bugs" section, this section is for discussing reviews.

I also picked up on that review chopper is referring to when it was posted and it did strike me as strange at the time ?  then I thought about it and maybe its on the wrong side of five stars if you catch my drift ?  I mean there is no questions asked five star ratings and then there is the 4 1/2 stars but we cant have half stars so we round it to five stars type rating.   few,  glad I have finished typing that I couldn't stand to type it again,  hope it makes sense.     Confused

I think Erik has announced numerous times to leave (running the same arguments) and yet he returned ever so often.

The personal note could be erased for the purpose of the review, but I'm sure Guigo and Bob will decide best. It's anyway extra read, the reviewing part is, as usual, okay.

Whilst I relate to some new band addition sentiments I must say i am quite surprised by Erik's comments especially in a review..............Confused

I think that, also, this rule could be underlined:
7 - Remember that your reviews will be on the relevant album’s page for all to read for many years to come. Do not therefore word your review with only the front page (which shows the latest reviews) in mind. Consider whether the review will still make sense in 5 years time and more.

The extra part in Erik's review basically means that, even quicker than in 5 years by now, no one will understand the purpose of those written things. Times changes, and I've said, they could even bring Erik back (in case he actually left - again).

Comments noted, and will be addressed. The commercial link in Erik's reviews has the full approval of M@x, indeed he facilitated it.

What Erik wrote in the review in my mind sounds very provocative.

We must accept that today all the music 'complicated' is described as Prog (Progressive) and PA can not remain deaf to all this. For example just leave aside everything that does not like and focus only on what you want to promote (even causing, if civilly and constructively).

I can understand that the insertion of I Pooh in PA has offended the sensibilities of many. Yet until 1975 clearly had some Prog elements in their music and today in Japan and South Korea (especially) are very collected by collectors of Italian Prog. Even if I Pooh inclusion in the PA can not find it totally correct
we must also take into account what I said above.

And it is in this direction that PA (rightly) must look to stay in step with the times. And I am sure of this, Erik has understood. But not accepted.

And I say this with pride, says that one of misfortune in life has been so much... But that now sees everything under another perspective.
