Well I have One Shot's debut on my laptop and their second Vendredi 13 on CD, as well as Ewaz Vader, of course.
I now need Dark Shot.  Just for the record: Rate Your Music lists an album called Listen to my Heart under One Shot's discography and judging by the cover art, this is NOT by the same band.  Edited by James - September 07 2008 at 13:52 |

I might also want to grab Dark Shot and Volapuk in my next Wayside order as well - but because Dark Shot includes that DVD it's fairly pricey. Might have to order from Greg soon as well because he's the only one I've found who has October Equus. edit: might also throw The Red Masque onto that Wayside order. Just been sniffing around the RIO MP3 samples and I love the 3 songs from Art Zoyd. I looked around and their albums run from $27 to $40! Yikes, makes Magma albums look cheap. I checked Wayside and Synphonic. Doug Larson has none. Gemm is even more expensive. Amazon has MP3 download albums for $18, but I am a very tactile and visual person, particularly when it comes to my music collection. Does anybody have any idea where to get their CD's a little cheaper (or a lot).

I've looked around myself, and with a lot of these bands, if you want the CDs you're going to have to shell out a lot I'm afraid. I settled for getting their albums from emusic and sacrificed sound quality (and not really) and the physical medium for a vast reduction in cost. |

have you tried Amazon.com? I found they are around the $20 mark. At one time they had the japanese mini-lp cd reissues over at wayside. but they are not cheap. However, they are certainly worth it imo. |

Yep, I think it's those two I'm after... I'm after the two live albums that contain the two versions of Facelift that formed the version on Third. I have a lot of live Soft Machine but neither of them are those two, I don't believe. |

I've bought the INA GRM boxset from that website and there's other fascinating electro-acoustic and experimental music albums in there that are very worth looking into.
The next purchase from there will be the Bernard Parmegiani boxset with almost all of his output which has stellar releases.

I'm going to ask a strange question: what avant bands would you guys consider bad? I want to hear it because I'm questioning my ability to tell the difference, and when 90% of everything sucks, I'm surprised that there is so little negativity in this thread, or around any avant group.
You can get them even cheaper than on Amazon at eMusic, but you're going to pay for the CDs since they're OOP.

I would agree with you on Thinking Plague, although I'm enjoying Crisis in Clay so far. But both of those are critically acclaimed, so it's not really what I'm talking about. I want the Nickelback of avant-prog. Do they exist? It seems like they must.

Problem is since I'm so new to the scene, I get exposed to bands that most people think are awesome, particularly people whose taste I know to have high correlation with my own. I will say I don't think I've heard of a RIO/Avant band that's been universally despised; and to use rileydog's example, I really enjoy Thinking Plague, so I guess the worst I've seen is a sort of split decision. |

I'm sure there's bad stuff out there; I could blow into a microphone while playing random chords on a guitar and then overdub random bass notes over it and call it avant-prog. It's just that nobody would want to listen to it, and so nobody would want to talk about it.
