Topic: dark prog rock Posted: September 21 2004 at 21:47 |
I like VDGG but discovered a band that I think is even better (by a little) and darker by the name of Island. Needless to say, I was looking to find more dark prog rock from the late 60s to the mid 70s (76/77).

Just wondering but how would you define 'dark' in this context? Lyrics about suicide maybe? Does 'dark' mean 'evil' or do you mean 'weighty' really?

MUSEO ROSENBACH's "Zarathustra" from 1973 is quite dark (the MP3 in the Archives being the lightest piece on the album), which one would expect given the subject (Friedrich Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zarathustra"). It's worth trying, carl!, as it fits both your stated criteria. Check out the reviews of the album in the Archives.

People are puzzled why I don't dig the Stones, well, I listened to the Stones, I tried, and I tried, and I tried, and--I Can't Get No Satisfaction!

Its hard to describe dark I guess. VDGG and Island just have this feel to them. I don't want dark depressing, I guess just evil and weighty.

Discipline and Matthew Parmenter (MP is the violinist/singer/keyboard player in Discipline). Very dark and sometimes very VDGG like, as is Parallel or 90 Degrees.

Lists by The Owl and Greenback are quite significant: I would add ART ZOYD, NEBELNEST, HOYRY KONE, FAUST

Certainly support Diddy's list here - especially the earlier Anekdoten Vermod and Nucleus. However, while Univers Zero is dark musically you will be shifting into the very distinct and different branch of prog - RIO.
You asked about records from the 70's, try Spooky Tooth/Pierre Henry's Ceremony - probably ST's only prog album. Also check an earlier album, the self-titled first album by White Noise - the last two tracks (which made up side 2 of the original vinyl release) are dark, especially compared with the relative daftness of (the original ) side one. And some recordings released by Blue Oyster Cult, have their moments of dark progginess.

How about Alamaailman Vasarat ?
Just surf to their Website and have a look at the superb (and VERY dark) videos...
Just go to "Albums" and hit the "Videos & Samples" link
