I never listen to anything other than prog, the very occasional Boston tune or something else notwithstanding.

I was never a big Slayer fan.
I always actually really loved their really early stuff, even the pre Reign in Blood albums, Haunting The Chapel, Hell Awaits and Show No Mercy.
Seasons of the Abyss is the last album from them that I liked.

Me too, that's where I stopped.  I was listening to Decade of Aggression a little, pretty good live set.

Then I punted for Rust in Peace because what the hell I'm in a metal mood, might as well go for the best.

RIP............... Nothing before or after could quite top it in the pure thrash metal stakes.
Technicality, aggression, ridiculously tight song writing, Marty Friedman's supreme soloing style.... and heck, even a few hints towards prog on at least 3 of the songs there.

This kicks as much ass as it did when it came out, still sounds so fresh.

Ah, the good old days of MTV!  When I could flip on Headbanger's Ball at 11:30 and watch the video for "Holy Wars" Tongue

Damn man, sometimes I wish I was that age, being a teen around the time all these awesome albums came out.
All the classic thrashmen got old, and less inspired.

To answer the original question, these days I listen to nothing but prog. Although throughout my life I've always gone in phases of listening to nothing but one genre for several years. One of these days I'm going to dig out some of the stuff I used to listen to (Slayer included) and see what I get out of it.

I remember being jealous in the late 80s when older kids saw Metallica on the AJFA tour - I was only like 12 or 13 and no way my parents would let me go to that - people thought metal was SCARY!

Man, I'd think metal was pretty scary too if you had guys like Dave Mustaine in your band

Only Deicide was scary.  The dude burned an upside-down cross into his forehead!  WTF!

I have this friend, most metal guy you've ever seen. ALWAYS wants to hear thrash metal.

He used to listen to hip hop, and it never entirely left him, and now and then he learns lyrics to Australian hip hop songs that remind him of his lower/working class background. One of the best things ever is too see this guy drunk, wearing a Slayer t shirt and reciting hip hop lyricsLOL
