What the hell is wrong with Schecter? Any Schecter is going to be better value for money than any EBMM guitar/bass, and Schecter instruments have a reputation for being able to crap all over stuff 2-4 times the price. Any anyway, the John Myung Model isn't even a production line instrument, check the website first you nong

I've heard a lot of good things about the Ibanez ATK 305...
Sounds almost liske a Stingray for a quarter of the price...You should take a look!

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Schecter basses are really good value for money. Warwick's Rockbass series are good, but I'd rather save up for a proper Warwick instead. Ibanez make some very nice instruments at good prices, you should be able to find a really nice Ibanez if your budget is at $700.
Also look at used instruments. You can get great deals on great gear, especially if you buy directly from the seller or through smaller, independent stores.
The problem with both Schecter and Ibanezes, Schecters in particular, is that they feel soulless and boring. But I guess that's just a personal thing. At their price, Schecters in particular are really good instruments.

Like Phileas said, I'd recommend searching used gear. Since my first bass, I have yet to buy a single brand new bass. I really don't plan on buying a new bass any time in the future unless it's a custom shop bass made specifically for me.

Absolutely amazing basses! I'd definitely say to stick with the Czech models and US models. A ton of low end and growl. One of the few mass produced basses I'd love owning.

^Indeed! Spector make easily some of the best bass guitars right now, no question. Exceptional quality with the Czech and US made models for sure. Basically, if you're looking for something that will give you great tone , versatility and has extremely easy playability, Spector is a name to look to.

Five- and Six-string basses all have really humongous necks.

Not necessarily. Six strings tend to be really wide, but there are five strings with pretty slim necks, almost like wide fours.
