Is Trout Mask Replica really that essential? I've heard parts of it on Youtube because someone kindly uploaded most of the album, and I wasn't too impressed. I can see why it was important in 1969, but I didn't really like it. It all seemed to me to either be mostly standard blues with a few twists or cacophony that I didn't find very moving. Maybe I need to try again, I don't know. |

Although, I'm kind of in a rut right now. I want to listen to good music, but my job requires me to listen to 7 hours of terrible pop music every day, which prevents me from enjoying much good music or having the energy to listen to any music.

Yeah, it's hard to work 25 hours a week without being there for 25 hours and listening to their radio for 25 hours. And like most of you, I can't block it out at all.

Has anyone here ever listened to Oliver Messiaen? Henry Cow cites him as an influence, and from listening to his music, it's what I consider "RIO Classical." It's very very similar to Henry Cow in my opinion.

Mamma Non Piangere (very HC reminiscent) and Combo FH (another bassoon user band).
For bands similar to UZ/Present and the likes, Sotos and Zaar are essential. If you like Shub Niggurath you should also check out SN guitarist Frank Fromy's solo album Quatre Axes Mutants from 1988. About equally as dark and threatening. And let's not forget Yog Sothoth, a very dark and brooding band (also from France) that released one (excellent) album in 1984, very similar to SN in sound!
Just drop me a PM if this sounded interesting

I have Turangalila-symphonie and Quatuor pour le fin du temps and both are excellent. I've only heard them twice and need to give them a lot more listens. I need to try hear those Cow sounds though. |

I heard his only electo-acoustic piece ever and it's unfortunate that it's his only electro-acoustic ever because it's my favorite electro-acoustic piece ever. If that makes sense. |

I first heard it and I was like "WTF?! This sucks!" and then listened to it again and one song (Moonlight on Vermont) clicked, so I put the album on again and a few more songs clicked and so on and so on and now it's one of my favorites ever. |

TMR was a very confusing and VERY different listen for me first time. It's pretty much the kind of album that must grow on you, I had to give it at least ten spins before it clicked for me, and I was veyr unsure about if I was going to like it at all in the beginning. I wasn't very familiar with avantgardistic music either back then, but it certainly helped me appreciating Avant music easier. Considering you like Henry Cow and the likes, you should give it a closer listen and you might get surprised

Hehe, it was exactly the same way for me. It clicked for me on the very same song! (I remember finding myself whistling it!) I tend to think there are two important things to note about TMR: first, don't expect to like it - or even process it as 'music' - the first few times you hear it. Second, afterwards, your confidence with 'difficult' music (if you lacked it in the first place) will soar. But don't mind me, I love TMR. |

Ah, Melissa has returned!
Can you perhaps relay your thoughts on Infernal Machina? I believe you ordered it recently, so was perhaps wondering if you had heard it yet? |

Hello, your Jamesness. I put my first impressions on the Jannick Top thread, but I shall repeat them here. I liked it (heard it 2 or 3 times now), but: 1. Parts of it are so reminiscent of 'De Futura' to pretty much be 'De Futura'. (Which is fine, because I love 'De Futura'.) 2. Other parts of it (where CV et al contribute) are (heh, funnily enough...) terribly Magmaesque. There was one bit which had the same feel/timbre as 'Wurdah Itah'. Another part seemed to kinda quote MDK. Again... not a problem if yer like Magma. So... nicely played, very entertaining, but not very innovative! (Will this do...?) |

Ah yes, that answers it.
I enjoyed it. A lot more metallic than I was expecting. It sounded a bit lacklustre on the second listen though. And the last track is a big disappointment for me. |

I prefer Onze Danses Pour Combattre une Migrane (I'm sure I butchered the spelling of that). Plus, I find that it's an easier album to track down than Un Peu...

I think I ordered Onze Danses Pour Combattre le Migraine recently from Wayside... my memory is appalling at the moment though. |
