I actually really wish my parents had got me into that. My mum is not musically inclined at all, but my father used to play a lot of classical guitar. At
least he got me into Yes, Pink Floyd, some Genesis and Focus. He liked
some classical guitar stuff as well, but for the most part he wasn't
huge on classical really.
|
My parents had me listen to
classical music when I was a baby. Today though, they don't listen to
music that's much better than "classic rock" or straight up 80s pop.
Alex was kind enough to introduce me to prog off of a "Hey, I see you
like Kansas" conversation and gave me a few Yes albums to listen to.
The rest, as they say, is history.

Nice (except the whole parents liking 80s pop and ghey classic rock) I've been into heavy metal since, probably about 1999 or 2000. I just can't get it out my system, I know I'll always love metal. Don't listen to as much nowadays, but I guess I got to expand my taste to more Prog metal and Tech/Extreme Prog metal thanks to PA and suggestions from other people
|
I used to listen to a LOT of metal before I started listening to prog (yes, I went through a Metallica phase like most people these days), so Opeth was one of those bands that I had no problem getting into. Most of the classic/more symphonic prog is what took me some time to get used to. The more aggressive stuff on the other hand came easily.
|
For me, it was more Megadeth than Metallica. I really like Metallica, but love Megadeth really. It took me a little while to get into the classic/more symphonic prog, but it came eventually, and I still love it. And indeed, Opeth just kick major butt.

Harry, my team lost the championships last night. Damn! I then decided to leave that team and join another one. I'll be starting my duties as a Physio Therapist for my new team this Monday. They offered me a bigger pay, benefits and bonuses. Hopefully things will get better.

Sucks your team lost, but sounds like you got the good end of the deal with the new Physio work

I started with a nice blend of Judas Priest and Maiden (still two of my favourite bands), before moving on to heavier territory with a strange brew of speed/power/prog metal bands such as Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Kamelot, Hellowen, Sonata Arctica and who knows what. But then I reached a point when I just couldn't stand all the double bass frenzy and thought that all metal of that sort just sounded the same. A prejudice I still live with, and it keeps me from even wanting to explore the prog metal sub. But at least I went on to discover classic rock/metal in the shape of mainly Deep Purple and Rainbow, which somehow also led to the Who and the Beatles and other proto-prog and prog-related bands. The real prog breakthrough occurred when I discovered Kansas and became an instant fan of this "new" style of music. Rush quickly followed together with DT, Threshold and a moderate intake of Yes. And with that in the backpack I started to visit PA on a regular basis and eventually joined up just to give a few Rush records some well-deserved stars (now gone; not the stars, but the ratings) and lurk around the forum. Since my introductory post - an avalanche of musical masterliness. And there you have it, the story of my life

Time to listen to an album that's not as good as the one you just finished?

That is definitely next on my list. I don't think I'll have enough time for that tonight though...
