^ yes, how easily we forget that Prog ruled the world at one point, however briefly..  heck, Passion Play was #1 on the US charts for a time, does that make it a pop record?   ...maybe so Shocked Smile

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I voted Beatles. Can't I ever escape their smug grasp? They're everywhere I go!!! I want to feel safe here at the PA.

Also, I'm quite upset that Kate Bush is on the list...and someone voted for Her!!! She is genius.

seconded. Kate is a class artist just need to listen to The Dreaming. I also think Tori Amos is 'nearly' her equal but not quite. But the Beatles are the one of the most original and forward looking bands of the 60s and noone should ever forget that
was that just an Am augmented minor 9th i heard? nice!

C'mon, how are The Beatles pulling over 20%?  Have you all no sense of history?  Without them none of the other bands, nor any on this site other than perhaps good ol' Miles now causing much gnashing of teeth over in the fusion category, would even exist as a recording enterprise.  The Beatles success encouraged, or in fact demanded, that record companies (those who wanted to stay in business anyway) invest in rock and roll, which allowed the rock spectrum to expand almost exponentially.

Go give a quick listen to the American Graffiti soundtrack.  (BTW, very enjoyable music on it.)  But if you think that prog was somehow going to crawl out of THAT primordial ooze you are mistaken.

Second the first part Wink

Am I now allowed to say that I do not want Miles Davis here? No? Ok, than I'll vote the band I never thought to find on progarchives, that is.. Iron Maiden! Highly influential to metal, yes, but does that make you qualified to Prog Related? Anyway, a great band..

Other candidates would be 10cc, Radiohead and Black Sabbath..

I know most of these bands and I agree with most posts saying that most of these bands / artists have some prog elements and as said before this is why we have the prog related sub-genre.
I devide the list to 4 parts :
1. truely prog bands like talk talk (their last 2 album are fully prog) and moody blues who actually started it all.
2. Bands or artists in the begining of the 70's who was part of the revolution in popular music and were very influencial to others like Bowie, Deep purple, Led zeppelin and even the who (which I personally appreciate less). In a way Jefferson airplane also fit here with their american folk that was quite unusual at the time.
3. Bands with very few progy moments like the beatles (A day in life) or Sypertramp (School, I find the rest of COTC quite shallow and boring).
4. The doors - I find them not prog at all.

However, their inclusion (all of them) does not ruin the site at all. The only band that it's inclusion could cause a problem is the beatles since they are so popular everywhere but if that did not happen yet it will probably never happen.

Iron Maiden. Damn, I still don't understand why they are here, it is so senseless...
However, I am shocked that so many people want to kick The Beatles, as they were one of the bands, that invented Prog.

There are many, many more bona fide prog acts who I like far less than anyone on this list yet, somehow, it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of this site.

Don't like a certain band? Then don't read about them, don't spitefully review their albums, don't start negative threads and polls, find something better to do with your time.

Whoever voted for Roxy Music's exclusion = your doorbell will ring and a sulfurous , sexily-clad siren will grab you by the scruff of your neck, plant a wet kiss on your nose and proceed to whip you senseless while listening to the Bogus Man on a loop ! The proggiest sex you ever had!                  hahahaha

You make me wish I'd voted for Roxy Music's exclusion.

I hadn't listened to Roxy music for years until recently I put on old cassettes of the debut and For Your Pleasure and remembered just how good it is (and progressive too).
