Oh, that makes me think of a new title! The RIO Room (We're too RIO for any other name)!

Yeah, I know!! I'm on Hail to the Thief now... it blows my mind to think that some would call it "commercial". Great album!

People think Radiohead is mainstream either because 1) Most people haven't heard anything past OK Computer 2) Most people haven't heard anything besides Creep or 3) MTV tried to make Radiohead it's b**ch back in the 90s
|
Thankfully, Radiohead broke away from that and has continued artistically. That is what sets them apart from the mainstream; that, of course, and their unconventional style of composing. But most people just ignore that.
If they weren't so popular, I think they'd be much more apt to be conceived "art rock" than they are in most people's eyes, whether in general or on PA.
|
Then again, most people are idiots musically. However, thank goodness there are at least some prog bands (Radiohead, Tool, etc) that manage to achieve some mainstream success. It just goes to show you that you can dupe the mainstream listeners with good music now and then

What has always dumbfounded me is that all other forms of "entertainment"/the arts... such as painting, sculpture, cinema, etc. actually have as much exposure for pieces that are well worth the creative effort as well as some stinkers out in the mainstream so that most people know about them. Why has music been twisted to become an exception? I mean, I could answer that... but it's a pity really.

Indeed. But enough about topics that make me sad. Let's turn this into a "Geddy Lee can shred your b**ls off with one of his solos" thread

Wow, the RIO Room actually has been heading to constructive conversation. Maybe I ought to "James" things up. (Yes, I just made that a new verb ) 'Radiohead is SO RIO. Listen to that distorted guitar! Just because I like it I'm going to call it incredibly RIO, which makes it better than everyone else's stuff!' (Nah, James rocks, I'm not mocking him... he's just a n00b )

Geddy > You.
That's like THE written truth for any bassist.
|
Indeed. I think I'd know that personally
|
Haha, Geddy is my favorite bassist... but, in seriousness, you know I don't agree with that statement. Everyone has to hold to their own style and never can compare themselves to someone else, as everyone's style is different.
But you already knew that.
One of these days maybe you'll catch Geedy in terms of awesomeness though.
|
Or better yet, maybe I'll surpass him. But if I surpass Geddy Lee, then what does that mean?
|
That means the world will explode instantaneously.
|
Fine then. Instead of surpassing him, I'll challenge him to a bass duel. The world will then explode from all the funky, complex, riffs we'd be bouncing off each other. Oh and did I mention that the riffs are, of course, RIO bass riffs?
