Industrial actually has much to do with progressive music. Have you ever listened to Nurse with Wound?
And what's with the attitude?
I just fished this up from WikiPedia in a couple seconds:
Industrial music is a loose term for a number of different styles of experimental music, especially but not necessarily electronic music. The term was first used in the mid-1970s to describe the then-unique sound of Industrial Records artists. Since then, an extremely wide variety of labels and artists have since come to be called "Industrial." So yeah, Industrial music is a huge factor in the hisotries of experimental music. Popular bands like Hella, Lightning Bolt, and Deerhoof all took influence from the genre. And since when does RIO have a defined sound? RIO is more or less avant-prog, which is also another term for highly experimental music. And with that, there aren't many walls to contain the genre in a neat, little square... it can go anywhere from noise and industrial with the likes of Nurse with Wound and to contemporary classical with the likes of Univers Zero to jazz with the likes of KoenjiHyakkei and Henry Cow to metal with the likes of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Kayo Dot to even pop with the likes of Frank Zappa.
In fact, this thread is probably the magnet of most of my replies in this entire forum. Be open-minded, RIO isn't always "what you might expect" per se. Throughout my ventures with this genre, I think I can say that I'm well-versed with what it has to offer. I think others here that know me can back that up as well. fine. but I think this particular band you are pushing has more to do with Psych/noise than RIO...especially if you are talking about first wave RIO stuff. but really does splitting hairs like this matter? I only categorize so that I can talk about music, otherwise it is all just music.
while we are on about it, check out Burial Hex: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=228439055 I have not listened to Nurse With Wound yet... maybe this band of yours should be included in the list -with concessions *(like the fact that it is not "typical" RIO material)* |

I got more CDs in the mail today. Which means you
Right now, I'm giving Present, 'Certitudes' a first go. I'm only on the first track but it's a so far! This band could easily be my favourite RIO... they're just so instantly entertaining. I like how it's clever stuff but you don't have to try too hard with it... |

haha, looking at your last.fm - I'm playing Ahvak right now.
Your reviews are my recommendations - keep 'em coming! Present keeps getting better with every listen, I'll be sure to check out their other works. |

Don't forget Shub-Niggurath, Miss M.
Addendum: Ahvak is a terrific album and one of my favourites of all time. Listen out for the cat's meow. Edited by James - August 11 2008 at 14:32 |

What, my opinionated ramblings...? I'm going to reserve any comment on Ahvak until I've heard it again - there's a lot going on in there! James: haha, yes, I did hear the meow. Even though it's only one moment, they should have credited the cat with guest vocals... I'll get around to Shub-Niggurath one of these days... Meanwhile, I've got Univers Zero, 'Heresie' to look forward to tomorrow (might not have time to play it this evening - also, I don't want to have nightmares)... |

Ahvak will blow you away even more the second and third and fourth and fifth times. I still hear new things with it.

Agreeing with James, Ahvak is a wonderful album indeed. One of the best in "modern" RIO, In my opinion
Be careful with Present though, they're addictive
I tried to drum to Le Poison Qui Rend Fou here the other day, a bit more practising now and I think I can nail it! It's awfully tricky to play after though!! Mark my words!

Ha, yes, I can see how Present could be addictive... Wow, good drumming on your part by the look of it! (Now, if I could apply myself to those brief vocals... we'd have the beginnings of a PA Present cover version! ) I'm giving UZ, 'Heresie' a go right now. 'La Faulx' was excellent, 'Jack the Ripper' is currently playing - I feel I should be wearing black in a basement for this! (Not sure what's with this Last.fm sig thingy, it's showing the wrong time... ) |

I'm a musician, but I doubt we need two drummers. |

Present with polyrhythms would be intense.

Multiple drummers sounds pretty cool to me. (Bear in mind though that one of you should make extraordinary faces, and the other should have weird hair. Yes, sorry, I watched that 'De Futura' youtube video again... )
Listening to Ahvak for the second time and it's growing on me... |

I finally got a hold of Koenjihyakkei's (remastered) debut - while not up to the frenetic awesomeness of Angherr Shisspa, it was still very good.
