Yes Rilleydog, the first time helps if done repeatedly is placing preasure, and this error has been reported more than 20 times over a week.
If people could just read what has been reported already, wouldn't put preasure on someboody that I know is working a lot in this problem for over a month to give us a site that we enjoy for free.

Not sure what the 'Service Unavailable' root cause is, but I wonder how much of the forum slowness and the SQL errors are attributable to CPU usage by searchbots. We've always had a lot of traffic from these crawlers, but the last few months or so the percentage of bot logins has risen to where it is usually 90%-plus of the number of logged users at any given time. I've sat and refereshed the users screen several times on different occasions to see if these guys are using reasonable policies for polite cataloging, and most of them don't seem to be. I would not be at all surprised if 98% or more of the site's traffic is due to these bots. And since virtually everything on this site is stored in a SQL database and uses ASP code, I would assume that means a lot of CPU usage. One option (if this hasn't been explored already) would be to restrict searchbots from the forums. I know M@x needs max exposure (no pun intended) for traffic count purposes as well as the 'free' advertising that search engines offer, but I would think this would apply more to the discog section of the site than the forums. The forum data isn't as attractive for a few reasons: - it is more volatile (changes constantly, which just perpetuates the searchbot traffic); - is of limited value to the outside world (ever come across a snippet of a ProgArchives forum thread while Googling for something? These usually fall far down the list on searches and are also usually stale and/or not really appropriate to whatever you were searching for); - there doesn't seem to be any logical rhyme or reason on how these things search or how long their host sites retain the information in their active engine databases. I'm sure M@x has explored all this fully, but I have wondered for quite some time how invasive these bots are to the site as far as bandwidth drain on the server(s), database connections, and CPU usage. I suppose they help keep the hit counts up at least.... |

The site is running very slow for me today, and quite often when I click a link I get a Service Unavailable error. I have to go out of the forum, and come back in and then the problem resolves itself....temporarily.

I'm afraid there are ongoing issues. M@x is working very hard to resolve them, but they are proving difficult to eradicate.

I have the same issues as others, except I cannot access any threads in Firefox!
I get the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.
So I'm having to use Internet Explorer for the time being.
I've cleared my cookies and my history in Firefox and I'm still not having any luck.
HughesHB4 also messaged me privately and said he had the same error.

I was getting that same error yesterday in Firefox at work.
Now I'm either getting service unavailable, or:
Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while writing to the database. Please contact the forum administrator. Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_getUserData()_update_last_visit File Name:- functions_login.asp Error details:- Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server Timeout expired |

I've solved my Firefox error.
If anyone else is experiencing this, you can solve it by doing the following: Go to "Tools" when the error page comes on for P.A. Drag down to "Page Info" Click on the "Security" Tab Click on "View Cookies" You should see a list of Progarchives cookies... delete them by going to "Remove Cookie" for each one (or highlight them all first). That should solve the issue. Edited by James - August 01 2008 at 18:49 |

And no, I didn't even misquote this time.
Who would be dumb enough to buy a firefox error?
I apologize. The temptation was just too great.
Seriously, thanks James. I'll do that the next time I'm on FF if I have a problem.

Why you... Hopefully that'll work, it did for me. Simply deleting cookies in Options didn't work for me. |

Thanks James for this clue ...
Don't know why exactly - but it works better when deleting the old cookies .. even if there were build new ones soon ... |

Not a problem. It took me ages to work out. I thought deleting the cookies via Options (under Tools menu), would do the trick but it doesn't. You have to delete the cookies for the whole site, as I indicated above. I still get the SQL errors of course and it's still slow but at least I can use Firefox again... IE was driving me mad! Resetting cookies every so often is always a good plan. It means you will have to log back-in but that should not be an issue. It just makes new Cookies anyhow. There were obviously some old cookies that were causing the issues. Edited by James - August 01 2008 at 19:39 |

Probably it's a coincidence but I'm browsing through the forum actually and no new errors are occurring after deleting the old cookies ... let's monitor this for a while ... Edited by Rivertree - August 01 2008 at 19:50 |

It's good to see you all folks again. Yesterday I couldn't access any links except the front page and front forum page at all.

Riccy...I'm relieved that I wasn't the only one...yesterday evening, I couldn't get past the main forum page either, and I tried at intermittant intervals throughout the evening..

well, since only 6 reviews were managed to be input yesterday (I monitored closely), the site could have been revived at some point, but it must have been for short time. I do imagine that most had this problem as well, so that it was general. |

Yesterday evening was probably the worst period I've seen on the forums for timeout errors.

It's posted Andrea, seems you have not been here for some days....Maybe I'm wrong.
But there's a new addendum at the end of the space for postiong the reviews: Posted review may be delay to appear in site due to caching feature
Sometimes it takes even 30 minutes between the time you posted it and it appears in the home page.
