I need to sort a passport out... and if all works out with my lady friend, I may convince her to go... although it's a way off yet!

As long as nobody from Faust wields a chainsaw in the crowd this time round, all will be good!

Magma = holy...
Koenjihyakkei = holy...
Present = holy...
The Muffins = holy...
Univers Zero = holy...
Jannick Top's Infernal Machina = holy...

Don't know Yolk, Aranis or SGM yet.  Aranis are Belgian chamber prog though, I believe.

This is quite possibly the best festival ever in the history of festivals!

Six of my favourite bands/artists... holy...

King of Siam is, Adam. Wink

And I like the fact everyone had similar reactions!  Melissa was polite though and didn't swear her head off.

I wonder what Assaf's reaction was when he first heard this news?

And Assaf, you're evil for not warning me about this! Evil%20SmileWinkLOL

Haha, I only swear when no-one's listening (reading?). LOL  Sailorish language just sounds wrong in a well-spoken English accent, anyway!

But I Is Very Excited! Big%20smile  A bunch of my favourite recent discoveries, so conveniently gathered - I'd be an idiot not to go, really.

But I think I'll go seulement.  (I, uh, I'm going to see Magma à Paris in Feb. (barring any mishap), and you can't really go to Paris for Valentine's day without your boyfriend, so he'll come too... but he doesn't want to go to the concerts!! Confused  So, I can't really consider dragging him to a field in France to further endure my taste in music. LOL)

Anyway: James, you have ample time to buy a passport and convince your ladyfriend to accompany you.  (Ladyfriend...?  Is that gossip I smell? Big%20smile)

Flora (the present Mrs Syzygy) came with me to the last RIO festival, but she's not going to bother this time - she likes some of the same music as me (she went to see Gong with me a few weeks ago and loved it) but she's not big on RIO aside from odd bits of UZ/Daniel Denis and she hates Zeuhl.

Martin (Alucard) and Sean Trane should both be along for this one, so it looks like being a big ZART team gathering. James - go to the post office right now and get your passport application!

Yolk - in fact there are two Yolk's: One is Swiss and the other French. The one in question is the Swiss one:

The French Yolk:
YOLK (wrote a review for them if you're interested).

ARANIS  -

Incidentally I just opened a thread about them here (which unsuprisingly has gone unnoticed again):
Listen to Aranis (chamber music)
By avestin, 24 July 2008 at 17:28

Aranis is a Flemish septet playing a somewhat minimalistic contemporary classical with touches of folk and the occasional post-rock spirit. Their music covers grounds from the repetitive and haunting to the more free spirited, melodic and compelling.

The group consists of Jana Arns (flute), Liesbeth Lambrecht (violin), Linde de Groof (violin), Marjolein Cools (accordion), Axelle Kennes (piano), Stijn Denys (guitar), Joris Vanvinckenroye (double bass)

Their music can be likened to a soundtrack (which is in accordance with the phrase on their main page – “Music for an imaginary film). At times sounding like a mixture of Yann Tiersen and Clint Mansell. Think of “Amelie” meets “Requiem For A Dream”.

Here are some excerpts from reviews as they appear in their website:
"Classical music and rock are growing towards one another. An evolution we can only be pleased about."
Focus Knack

"Two violins, a double bass, accordion, piano, flute, guitar and almost no voice: it is quite clear that Aranis wants to make music you do not hear just anywhere."
De Standaard

"The secret of Aranis lies in the compelling fact that, as a listener, you are flung to and fro between the finesse of a classical concert and the excitement of a rock concert."
De Tijd

Recommended for people who like DAAU, Volapuk, Gatto Marte and older chamber rock bands like Univers Zero, Julverne and Present.

Listen to the band here - http://www.myspace.com/aranis

Don't think I need to present SGM...

Oh and ZARTians, you have two new suggestions by Uwe and Greg in your thread; have a look, both valid additions!

They're more than a bunch of recent discoveries for me, Melissa, they're some of my favourite bands of all time!

I've already convinced the possible future ladyfriend to go. LOL  I just need to sort out a passport now. Wink

This lineup is definitely better than the 2007 one, although I love Faust.

Yeah, I just checked my college's calendar and I doubt I can go unless I take a week off from classes, blow all my savings, and convince my parents to let me fly to France.  Don't think it's going to happen. Cry

Oh well, at least I got to see Koenjihyakkei at NEARfest.

I was.

It's not from lack of wanting to, rather, it's been a lack of time... and a backlog of other albums to hear.

A message from the Estradasphere camp regarding a side project:

From:  Estradasphere

Date: Jul 27, 2008 7:22 AM
Subject: Orange Tulip Conspiracy Release
Body: Hello friends,

Five years in the making, Orange Tulip Conspiracy is finally here. A band that Jason Schimmel (Estradasphere, Secret Chiefs 3) formed and has been composing and producing for with the help of over a dozen amazing musicians from the L.A., Bay Area and Seattle music scenes. The album has been released through the label Web of Mimicry and is available right now. Please check out Orange Tulip Conspiracy’s self- titled debut album featuring heavily produced tracks and densely packed orchestrations. Taking the listener on a journey through an extremely eclectic musical mind Orange Tulip Conspiracy is a must have release of 2008.
So please go to
webofmimicry. com for more information and to order the record. You can also pick up the record at the Secret Chiefs 3 merch booth on their current U.S. tour.

Thanks.....

Here is a review of the record by Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls, Sublime Frequencies, Abduction Records)

Written and arranged by Estradasphere guitarist Jason Schimmel, Orange Tulip Conspiracy is an audio thrill ride into an expanding universe of drama, action, beauty and horror. Entirely instrumental, cinematic in scope, and backed by a monster cast of players (including Seattle's Bill Horist and Dave Abramson, Secret Chief 3's Trey Spruance, and the members of Estradasphere) Schimmel has composed and arranged 12 unique and highly-stylized tracks featuring countless areas of exploration with an array of sharp solos and clever tempo changes. It swings, it sways, it grooves and it rocks-these guys can play anything with frighteningly epic precision: eccentric lounge, Italian Giallo, futuristic metal, café' Romany, near eastern jazz. These are merely vague points of reference as descriptions like these don't do the music justice. These tracks are lean and tasty without a spec of fat on the plate blending classic retro styles with new ideas that cannot be properly articulated. Although Schimmel is an amazing guitarist and he proves it beyond any doubt on this record, there is a balance of spotlight and the list of insanely diverse instrumental elements all put to well-crafted use is staggering: pianos, Fender Rhodes, cello, bazooki, various brass, violin, organs, clavinet, vibes, accordian, banjo, exotic percussion, and much more drifting over powerful rhythm sections that morph from one mood to the next with seemingly no effort whatsoever. This should be a highly sought-after document for those interested in investigating the frontier of modern popular instrumental ensemble music, and an absolute must for any Estradasphere fan.

As those who don't know me don't know: I have played, recorded and toured with several groups - Cartoon, PFS, (Cuneiform Records) as well as 5uu's and Thinking Plague (ReR).
A recent interview about such things can be found here.

First listen through that Scott Brazieal album, I cannot say I'm overly fond. I'll give it another couple of spins before make a more informed decision.

Anyone picked up the new Imahoritsuneyoshidatasuya album? Their '06 album Territory was killer.

For those how don't know them, 'tis a duo between Tatsuya Yoshida and Tsuneo Imahori (tipographica) playing a RIO influenced/improv/noise rock/math rock style.
