For the record, that was not serious.

If Tony Levin was on the album as well there could be a bald bassist bitch fight - I'm sure there's a website devoted to that particular niche interest somewhere (probably in Germany or Japan).

There could be a market for a Bald Bassist Boxset. And that's my final stoopid remark on that front (hopefully)... Meanwhile, I shall go away and do a bit of reading up on Dave Kerman. People keep recommending things that he's been involved with, which is a good sign, methinks... |

U Totem is like the greatest thing ever. Besides that, I've never been a huge Kerman fan.

Dave Smith of Guapo rates Kerman as the best drummer around at the moment (Christian Vander aside, I believe). His work with Present, Ahvak and U Totem is superb, but like some others on here I'm not that keen on 5UUs - it seems to me that they don't always live up to their potential, although 'Regarding Purgatories' is a blindingly good album.

They're way too sterile and overproduced for my tastes. Which is odd because I absolutely love what Drake did with NeBeLNeST. |

Kerman and Drake are 2 of the most important musicians on the RIO scene, but somehow they seem to work far better seperately than they do together.

If you haven't done so already, I recommend that you listen to Drake's solo albums; Splendid stuff!
And on that note, has anyone had a chance to listen to Tim Hodgkinson's solo material?
Also some brilliant and very challenging. I'd recommend particularly the album Each In Our Thoughts
In the others he's collaborating with the Hyperion Ensemble, Iancu Dumtrescu, and Ana Maria Avram and goes into Spectral compositional style, electro-acoustics and total avant-garde.
Fabulous!

Right, that's my next shopping expedition sorted... I already knew I wanted more Present. One of my favourite recent discoveries (out of so many!). And I gave a listen to some Ahvak and U Totem samples earlier, they definitely seem to my taste, so they're on the list for sure. I'll wait for a bit though, I've bought a lot recently (don't want to overspend or end up with a listening backlog!). [Currently playing Weidorje again. Soundbite: Nice combination of pound-bash-stomp and dreamy soothing spaciness... ] |

Weidorje is my favorite NMZ (non-Magma Zeuhl) album ever.

Hehe, I'm learning all the terminology here! Not familiar enough yet to pick a *NMZ* favourite of my own... I do Paganotti, though, so maybe this will be the one... |

So... a recap...
Just re-listened to U Totem and it's excellent. It has to be said though, that I prefer Zaar, Ahvak and Sotos' Platypus to it. I just tend to prefer my chamber prog without vocals, mostly. That's just me, I guess. It's still excellent mind you and I'll definitely listen to a lot more. |
