Present gave me a mental image of elegant vampires. LOL

I enjoy Present a lot, but Univers Zero's music is truly transcendent... to me at least (and others, I'd imagine).  They are unique in the fact that, depending on my mood and the time of day night, their music can either totally creep me out or not at all, but no matter what it brings about true cerebral and musical bliss, albeit a much darker bliss than anything else. Wink

I just know UZ is going to grow on me*.  One of those things that needs to be heard a few times before you completely 'get' it, maybe...

So far I find I have to be in the mood for it - not so much being in the mood to hear something 'dark' (I never thought I'd like dark music, but it seems I do, regardless of mood...), more like wanting to hear something unapologetically complicated.  I have to get my ear in!  Present is more immediate to me, more spacious/less crammed with detail...

(*Like mould on damp plaster. LOL)

That's your next purchase.

Excellent in all respects.

Oh, I see - you are our arbiter elegantiae of music purchases... Confused LOL

What's it like?

I'm not feeling very wordy today: excellent

LOL

Trust me, you'll love it.  Very original sound for chamber prog. Big%20smile  Kerman plays on drums for it.  Very well composed and better than Far Corner and NeBeLNeST.

Isn't it middle-eastern sounding?  Or maybe I'm just assuming that because of the band name, but I listened to samples a while ago and I hope time hasn't distorted my memory too much. Ouch

No, it's Present-influenced, chamber-rock
And excellent at that!!!

Also received Univers Zero's debut, the 08 remix/remastered edition.  It's quite fantastic, almost as excellent and dark as Heresie judging by early impressions.

And U Totem's debut too.  It's a kind of longer album so I was nodding off because of the heat and stuff, but from what I gathered when full conscious, it's pretty incredible and unique mix of chamber music, avant-garde, and female somewhat poppy vocals but it works well.

U Totem's s/t album is in my opinion one of the best albums I've heard.
Fabulous compositions and arrangements, brilliantly layered.
Well, I won't go too much into it, you can read the review I wrote for it.

Anyway, I think it's a must for any avant-rock fan!

YES!  I agree absolutely.  I was going to reply similarly, but wanted to see if anyone else would herald U Totem's S/T as the brilliant masterpiece that it is!!!!!

Then check out this band I mentioned earlier in this thread:

I'd like to recommend a stunning album I've come across by Danish band Svartbag and their s/t album.
Fantastic experimental/ambient/electronic/avant/drone/psych...

Here's their bio from their Myspace:
About Svartbag
A.REX and Niels Ladefoged founded Svartbag in 2002. The musical inspiration is based on a profound interest in early minimalists, noise, British shoegaze and early German kraut-rock. The band later expanded to three members with Peter Kyed on treatments (real-sound, drones and electronic beats) and occasionally four with Andreas Hauer-Jensen (Dureforsog, Ordklover, Mit Nye Band & Alle med Balloner og Terrasser) on drums.
.........................................................................................................

A.REX has, since 1979, been prevalent on the punk scene of Copenhagen in bands like Mad Gustav Band, Warshore, The Tide and The Bleeder Group. Under his own name he has, among other things, composed music for Nicolas Winding-Refn’s film “Pusher 2”.

Peter Kyed has collaborated for a number of years with Peter Peter (ex-Sort Sol/The Bleeder Group) on soundtracks for a number of films and computer games. Additionally, he is a member of The Bleeder Group and has released the solo album “The World Inside Her”.

Niels Ladefoged has been part of the organization Subotnick since 2002 and has in this context taken part in planning and executing more than 300 experimental concerts.
........................................................................................................

Svartbags music can best be described as sonic drones, analogue noise and repetitive space-rock with a touch of ambient and electronica. The music spans from dark and disturbing conditions to minimalistic melodies and rhythmic sequences. Svartbags live-performances are therefore also characterized as long, fluent, dynamical and epical.
.........................................................................................................

Svartbag has played concerts at mostly smaller venues in Copenhagen and two times at the Norberg Festival in Sweden in 2003 and 2004. Svartbag played at Roskilde Festival on the Metropol stage in 2005.
.........................................................................................................

At Norberg the Swedish Fat Bank Roll wrote: "Later Saturday night the Danish band Svartbag played a concert, which was one the highlights of the festival. With two guitars and all different kinds of electronic merchandise they produced very beautiful soundscapes, with small hints of rhythmic flows. Gentle, delicate, very nice..."
.........................................................................................................

At the concert at Roskilde festival the Danish music magazine Geiger wrote: "The drones take you within the architecture of music. The modulations, the substantial drumming and the deep drones from the guitars, set every body cell in vibration. It..s noisy, harsh and pleasant at the same time. A weird, but never the less a good feeling. Keep an eye on them.."

All the slashes add up to something that sounds really promising, I'll check the samples out once this song ends.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, but there is still non-obscure RIO I haven't checked out so it will be a while.  Plus there are a lot of other genres I'm into, if I focus on one thing I tend to lose interest after a while (this happened for Rush and prog metal, although I never focused on prog metal it used to be one of my favorite genres).

I saw on your RYM that it's one of the few albums you gave 5/5, out of the 539484893984398294 you owned so that inspired me (although there was a few months lag time before finally getting it).  Plus meeting Dave Kerman at NEARfest and talking to him a lot and only really being familiar with Present before made me want to check it out too.

Strangely for me A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers goes really quickly for 20+ minutes of eargasmicism.

Yet something like La Faulx or Jack the Ripper, seem to take a lot longer... yet are just as enjoyable.

Strange how that works.
