Some female progsters not yet mentioned

  • Lindsay Cooper (Henry Cow)
  • Georgie Born (Henry Cow)
  • Stella Vander (Magma)
  • Barbara Thompson (Married to John Hiseman of Colosseum fame, leader of Paraphenalia)

If we're talking in terms of looks as well, Bjork and Kate Bush both do it for me.

I think Tori Amos and Heather Findlay are the best that I've heard.

To add some sad news about Lindsay Cooper: She is suffering from multiple sclerosis. She and Georgie Born used to play in an all female band too.

In music: Anna Sofi Dahlberg from Anekdoten: there's something intrinsically sexy in a woman playing cello

Outside music: another Ana (this time with a single n). You'd be perfect if you played the cello!!!

I heard about that as well, Baldjean - the last I heard Fred frith was working on some music software so she could continue composing, though sadly her days as a performer are over .

I believe that she and Georgie Born were in FIG (Feminist Improvising Group) together, is that the all female band you were thinking of?

The sexiest woman ever to play cello was classical cellist Jacqueline Duprés. Her playing was incredibly intense. Sadly she died of mutliple sclerosis at age 42. And she had to stop playing cello a few years earlier.

Typo: she was Jacqueline du Pré. I don't agree with the "sexiest" thing (I prefer Anna Sofi), but I do with the intense playing, very especially in Elgar's concerto and Brahm's sonatas (the later with her hubby Daniel Barenboim). Although I guess the Stradivarius cello she received as a gift from a secret admirer had something to do with that beautiful sound...

Right about the spelling but wrong about the sexy. I saw some incredible footage of her playing cello on tv.

The best female singers I know are (in no particular order):

Progressive Metal: Anneke van Giersbergen, Heather Findlay and all the other singers Mr. Lucassen chooses for his Ayreon project.
Jazz: Karrin Allyson, Dianne Reeves
Rock: Alannah Myles

I have a feeling lots of the guys here mixes between great singers / song writers to sexy lady who sings. That's a well known male disease (Linda, how can you stand us ?).

Mine are :

Annie Hasslem - great voice but never wrote anything.

Janis Joplin - The same.

Grace Slick - one of the clearest & finest voices I ever heard and also good song writer (Lather, Hey Fredreich, Greasy heart, Have you seen the saucers to name a few). I was happy to see lots here remembering her.

Kate Bush - great singing & writing.

Tori Amos - the same as Kate Bush. It seems she is the heiress of Bush.

Flora Purim - worked a lot with Chick Corea.

P.J. Harvey - A real rock singer and excelent song writer.

Bjork - The most special voice (but I do'nt fancy her as a woman, sorry).

I will add Kristin Hersh that made a duet with Stipp (Your ghost - an excellent song and a nice album) and Dolores O'riorden that Linda mentioned (I did'nt know the name but I did like her singing and special voice).

Btw, Joan Baez is not bad especially when she sings live Gabriel's Biko or Al preso numero nueve.
