Sorry if this was brought up before, I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Just a little suggestion, different people judge albums with a different degree of harshness.  For example, some users may rate every album they like 5 stars, while other users will only rate an album 5 stars once in a blue moon.  While reading the reviews it is sometimes hard to tell which category the reviewer falls under.  Is this the best album they've ever heard?  Or is it just one of many that they enjoy.  Is this album actually that bad?  Or is the reviewer just really harsh.

It would be handy to display the users average review rating beside their name or something, to help the readers gauge how much those 5 stars actually mean.

And I believe this is my first post (though I've been using the site for awhile now), so hello all.

P.S  I also forgot to mention that I realize the content of the reviews are more important, but you also have to keep in mind those who only rate the album without giving the reviews.

There also could be users who rate almums they dislike with 1 star.
You can open everyone's profile and see ratings.

Though probably not a bad idea. I don't know whether it's easy to implement it.

Good idea, just did mine, on 211 reviews, my average is 3.8........Somehow I thought it would be higher.

Welcome Ahal89.

I like the idea, I think some reviewers might be quite surprised at what they see. There is for example one prolific reviewer who averages less than 3 for pretty much every sub-genre.

As NAP suggests, you can already get a good idea of how harsh or otherwise a reviewer is by looking at their profile. There you will also see whether their preferred sub-genres seem to match yours.

It's not that simple. If a reviewer has a very high average, it's impossible to tell whether this is because he generally gives higher ratings than other reviews or whether he is simply focussing on his favorite albums. I think that without more information about the reviewer's "strategy" people will almost always draw wrong conclusions from those averages. The same is - to a lesser degree - true for the album averages too ... you simply can't encode too much information into a simple number.

Well I don't know if I did the right maths, but it results I would have an average rating of 2.85. Shocked

As for the idea, I think that the step from "average rating per genre" to "average rating in general" is a rather small one.

I understand what you say Mike, and agree to an extent. I think most reviewers will focus on their favourites first though, and cover others over a period of time. I would therefore expect the average for a reviewer to go down as they review more albums.

I would expect though that most reviewers would average over 3 for the sub-genres they review in most, and indeed overall. To be below 3 suggests they are spending too much time listening to msuic which does nothing for them or that they are being too harsh.

I believe is just the contrary, normally if you review a genre more than the others, you probably know a bit mnore about it and you will rate not only the albums you love but also those you don't like.

For example my average is 3.80

My average of Symphonic ratings is lower

1 Symphonic Prog 111 3.66
2 Prog Related 15 3.40
3 Crossover Prog 13 3.85
4 Psychedelic/Space Rock 10 4.20
5 Prog Folk 9 4.22
6 Italian Symphonic Prog 9 4.44
7 Jazz Rock/Fusion 9 4.56
8 Neo Progressive 8 3.88
9 Heavy Prog 8 4.13
10 Various Genres 7 3.57
11 Eclectic Prog 5 3.60
12 Proto-Prog 5 3.80
13 RIO/Avant-Prog 1 5.00
14 Progressive Metal 1 4.00

Thats' because I'm familiar with for example all the Genesis albums (My favorite band), so I rated all the 3 men Genesis albums with 1 or 2 stars, plus the fact that I'm more confident to give 1 star to an album and a genere I'm completely familiar with.

I don't like Prog Metal very much or Avant, so I waited ubntil I found an album really liked from those genres to rate it, because it would be unfair oi rate all DT albums being that I know i don't like the band, but not so familiar with the peculiarities of Prog Metal.

Normally I wouldn't review a Psyche album I don't like, so my average there is 4.20

But normally, a reviewer goes first with the albums he/she likes...that's something I agree with.

I'm not sure that Genesis is a great example Ivan. In that case, as you suggest, you have rated all their later albums low because of the fundamental change in their direction.

Ah, I didn't realize it was already stored on the profiles.  If it isn't hard to implement it would still be more convenient to have them right in front of you.

I see where you're coming from Mike, but it's still a better indication than nothing, right?

That's true Bob, but the point is that being familiar with Symphonic abnd genesis, I dared to make so terrible reviews and give such low ratings, I wouuld not have dared to do the same with a band like Dream Theater because probably I wouldn't even noticed the change. LOL

I tryto give very high and low ratings only to the bands I'm absolutely familiar with.

^ I agree with that point... In my pie-chart, prog-metal has a lower rating than symphonic, because i've reviewed so many prog-metal albums that I've had to listen to some awful ones from time to time... In symphonic, i've reviewed mostly every genesis album with at least 2 stars and most of them 4 or 5, so the rating is much higher, and besides genesis, I've only reviewed a few more discs... The more one listens to a genre, the lower the rating may be as some bad albums will start to appear...

I don't know ... if people are prone to draw wrong conclusions from it then I would prefer "nothing".Wink

One cool solution would be to give users a way to comment on their rating strategy. Like a small text which could be shown along with any average or diagram.

Oh, like for example:
Ricochet - Symphonic Prog - Av Rtg 2.95
"Nothing to see here folks, mainly a low average rating drawn from too many lousy Rick Wakeman albums, that aren't even symphonic prog, having been reviewed by me."
