At "Le Triton", I believe?

Casino de Paris.

Oh, I'm sure I read Magma were playing at Le Triton... it's a popular venue.  Univers Zero play there as well.

Not that I have a passport, or anyone to go with, mind you. Cry

Wow, I've been in a grim mood all day, but I just put on my newly-acquired copy of the Debile Menthol 2-CD thing (which only took, like, 3 and a half months to arrive... Confused) - and now I'm smiling from ear to ear: Big%20smile - just like that!

Oh... I'm not sure if I like ALL of Débile Menthol's works or not.  "Battre Campagne" (is that what it's called?) is the best though.

Where did you purchase it from?

I got it from ReR - I think I was just unlucky with stock problems (ordered it at the same time as the Present CD that took such an age to arrive!).  Mind you, when I contacted them to see whether there was any news, it was all a bit "Ooh - um - yes!  That came in!  Oops!  I'll stick it in today's post!" LOL

It's that two albums in one thingy, combining 'Emile au jardin patrologique' and 'Battre Campagne' and calling it 'Emile à la campagne'.  This is only my second play of it so I'm mostly letting it wash over me (I find that's the best approach with new stuff).  So I'm not sure yet which one I prefer... Ermm

I've heard both albums.

I'll give them another play through and then decide whether I want that 2-CD set.

I ordered CDs from ReR UK ages and they didn't have one of the Japanese albums I was after.  I PM'd them but they said it was out of stock.  I'm pretty sure they still advertise it... hmm.

Samla Mammas Manna.

Yet another band I went far too long without having in my life.

Samla Is great (as are the following incarnations, Zamla and Von).
Which albums have you heard?

I'd like to recommend a stunning album I've come across by Danish band Svartbag and their s/t album.
Fantastic experimental/ambient/electronic/avant/drone/psych...

Here's their bio from their Myspace:
About Svartbag
A.REX and Niels Ladefoged founded Svartbag in 2002. The musical inspiration is based on a profound interest in early minimalists, noise, British shoegaze and early German kraut-rock. The band later expanded to three members with Peter Kyed on treatments (real-sound, drones and electronic beats) and occasionally four with Andreas Hauer-Jensen (Dureforsog, Ordklover, Mit Nye Band & Alle med Balloner og Terrasser) on drums.
.........................................................................................................

A.REX has, since 1979, been prevalent on the punk scene of Copenhagen in bands like Mad Gustav Band, Warshore, The Tide and The Bleeder Group. Under his own name he has, among other things, composed music for Nicolas Winding-Refn’s film “Pusher 2”.

Peter Kyed has collaborated for a number of years with Peter Peter (ex-Sort Sol/The Bleeder Group) on soundtracks for a number of films and computer games. Additionally, he is a member of The Bleeder Group and has released the solo album “The World Inside Her”.

Niels Ladefoged has been part of the organization Subotnick since 2002 and has in this context taken part in planning and executing more than 300 experimental concerts.
........................................................................................................

Svartbags music can best be described as sonic drones, analogue noise and repetitive space-rock with a touch of ambient and electronica. The music spans from dark and disturbing conditions to minimalistic melodies and rhythmic sequences. Svartbags live-performances are therefore also characterized as long, fluent, dynamical and epical.
.........................................................................................................

Svartbag has played concerts at mostly smaller venues in Copenhagen and two times at the Norberg Festival in Sweden in 2003 and 2004. Svartbag played at Roskilde Festival on the Metropol stage in 2005.
.........................................................................................................

At Norberg the Swedish Fat Bank Roll wrote: "Later Saturday night the Danish band Svartbag played a concert, which was one the highlights of the festival. With two guitars and all different kinds of electronic merchandise they produced very beautiful soundscapes, with small hints of rhythmic flows. Gentle, delicate, very nice..."
.........................................................................................................

At the concert at Roskilde festival the Danish music magazine Geiger wrote: "The drones take you within the architecture of music. The modulations, the substantial drumming and the deep drones from the guitars, set every body cell in vibration. It..s noisy, harsh and pleasant at the same time. A weird, but never the less a good feeling. Keep an eye on them.."

Well, the sky is blue, the sun is shining, the hills are green, and I have new CDs! Big%20smile

I played 'Weidorje' first.  Brilliantissimo! Clap

Now giving Thollot's 'Contact' a go - first impressions are... doubleplusgood. Tongue

Well, that's enough wittering for now... will supply more coherent opinions a little later on, probably...

Excellent albums, both.

Weidorje especially is a favourite of mine.  I have Contact but I need to hear it further before I can elucidate upon its grandness.

I find both of his releases fairly good if not above that; Contact is the better of the two, in my opinion, more to the point, more "mature" and ripe.

Speaking of Thollots, there's another different Thollot, Jacques (playing avant/rock), who's albums Quand le son devient aigu, jeter la girafe à la mer  and Cinq Hops  are worth getting. Fine pieces of early (in the case of the former album mentioned) pieces of avant-rock.

Haha, you make it sound like a fine French cheese! LOL

I could have bought both albums, but I decided I'd just get the more recommended one this time.  Might get the other at some point, though.

Gave it another spin just now - first impressions very favourable.  Has a nice elegant simplicity to it, I'd say.  Not as tricky or showy as some other things.  Every now and then it kept reminding me of various things, but in a subtle way...  If I have a criticism at this point, it's only that I'd like to hear a l-o-n-g piece from this guy.  The short pieces are really good, but now that my ears have got used to all this long epic stuff, it feels disjointed when a piece ends after 4 or 5 minutes! Tongue

Having a go with 'Toscco' now.  Haha, the complete opposite!  A delightful brutal onslaught! Big%20smile

[I liked the Debile Menthol I heard yesterday - so far I think I prefer the first album (of course, that may change) - the second one sounds more 'eighties', which I often find hard to enjoy at first.  More listening required there... Smile]

Edited to add... purely because I laughed out loud...

Hahaha! LOL  That is exactly the sort of thing I'd say.

A business trip today will allow me to sample both of these - I'll report back with my findings.  Wink

Melissa - I'm interested in acquiring that Happy Family album as well - thoughts?

I'm not Melissa (I don't have red hair or boobs) but if you enjoy your avant-prog a little more on the brutal side, then you'll enjoy them.  Don't expect a relaxing listen.  You've heard Ruins, who are also quite brutal and like them, so I think you'll enjoy Happy Family (who aren't as brutal).

I also have their debut, which is also excellent, as it happens.

Sorry to budge in, but... They are INSANE!
The first one more zuehl-related, and the second one completely going of the wall, zany, mad, psychotic...

I Love it!!!

So you claim. Tongue

Anyway, qualified as I am with titian tresses and t... uh, mammaries... yep, what he said.  Liking it a lot - vigorous, brisk, noisy, brash, confident, fierce and strangely light-hearted at the same time! Thumbs%20Up  I've not heard Ruins beyond a few samples, but as far as I can tell, this feels much more structured (which I think I prefer, to be honest).  Not as mad-sounding as Koenji (and no screeching thus far!), but something of the same organised chaos! Clap

That's what I meant... it's not as chaotic as Ruins and is more structured.  Probably due to Yoshi not playing for them. LOL

I'm more likely to have a headache after listening to Ruins, although Happy Family are just as insane and crazy musically.

I also prefer the structured sound.

Edit: I only have red hair and boobs at weekends LOL
